The Thing!

December 15, 2007

It’s a lot colder today. My shoulder was killing me when I got up and my left knee wouldn’t work. I did go for a walk, but it was short. There was no wind so I got out my heavy sweater coat. It was made with two strands of bulky yarn and tightly knit. It’s heavy and bulky, and very warm. It’s good for standing out in the cold and cat bedding and that’s about it. I don’t think I could even drive in the thing. And don’t even ask to see a picture of the thing. You don’t want to see me in it. It is not a pretty sight. Now, are you asking why did I made it? Well, I am not going to tell you. I was, but I don’t want the world to know how bitter I can be. It is probably the cold weather today that makes me think this way.

We’re going out with the neighbors for dinner. We usually have dessert at my house. I am thinking about raspberry brownies with cream cheese filling. I should also try to dig out the dining room table so we can play dominoes. Doug spent about three days going through his mother’s old papers looking for his birth certificate. His middle name was misspelled. He isn’t happy. I would also like to finish decorating the tree. We put it up around eleven last night. I never thought that I would have an artificial tree, but the time that I dislocated my left thumb(I’m left handed) changed my thinking.

I’m sewing Jenn’s tunic together so maybe next time I will have a picture. I finally managed to get a good picture of Gus.

Check out the background.

The Mittens are in the Mail

December 14, 2007

I drove up to the post office this afternoon and deposited my package in the slot inside. Mercifully, it just fit. There was a long line at the window and I had more then enough stamps on it. The bridge over the river is out for two weeks so I had to drive out to the highway and come back in. It took about three times as long as usual.

The socks were a pair I started last summer, but forgot about until I was looking for yarn. The mittens were made from Lion Brand yarn that I think my mother had. It said machine washable and dryable on the label. It was the only kind she would use. They are thick and soft so I hope they make someone happy. Now I can get back to my daughter’s tunic. The reindeer are also about done, but I am not looking forward to putting them all together. It will be worth it. They really look good.

Here are my oldest and newest Haflingers. I love these shoes. They were made for me. The arch is perfect. I can put on a brand new pair and wear them all day like they were my oldest. That includes walking down to the horse farm with my goofy dog. I wonder how long I can go without scraping them. I bought two pair because that’s what they had on sale in my size.

Mittens and Reindeer

December 11, 2007

I read this blog about this teacher wanting mittens and socks or slippers for the students at her school. Nearly all of the children come from very poor homes. I wish that I had known about it earlier, but I can’t read everything. So I am knitting mittens and socks. So far, I have made two pairs of mittens and one of socks. I figure I can send everything out by Thursday and it will get there on time. My reindeer are coming along slowly. The thread keeps breaking on this last spool and re-threading is wearing thin on my nerves. I just changed the needle so I know that isn’t it. Why is it always everything or nothing? I still have to finish my daughter’s tunic. I’ll be OK after Thursday. Well, maybe not. I just remembered I offered to knit a pair of gloves as a prize. Oh, wait. I said that I wouldn’t be able to start them until January. Wow. That was close.

I want to thank everyone for the comments. They make me feel like dancing. I will not be posting pictures today. Well, just one. Love ya.

He’s so helpful.

Myuushi’s Turn

December 8, 2007

Myuushi has been a little snotty lately and he has been sneezing so I decided it was his turn to see the vet. Our little road was still snow covered and icy where the sun hadn’t reached. Main roads were OK, but my vet is also on a little road. We didn’t have to wait very long this time, probably due to the weather. That’s why I decided to go today. He doesn’t take appointments. You have to sign in between 10 and 12 and wait your turn. Some people can’t stand this, but when you have a cat that knows every hidey hole in and around your house, it’s good. The Myuush was very overdue for his distemper for this reason. At least he always got his rabies shots. They held clinics at various schools around the county every Spring. He got two shots and liquid to take. It was 2PM yesterday before he got his first dose. I have learned that it is better to just wait until he shows up. When we moved, it took my husband and son two hours to find him. For a short, fat, football shaped cat, he can certainly be elusive.

I have almost finished my daughter’s tunic. A couple of good movies should do it. I started on a FSL(free standing lace) Santa, sleigh, and nine reindeer. Rudolf will be there, too. I hope I can get it done by Christmas, but it may make me crazy before then. After the embroidery, there are pipe cleaners, wire, glue and a sparkly red nose to deal with. Wish me luck. I have some other sewing to do, but I hate to jump back and forth on projects. I’d never get anything done.

Snow? In Delaware?

December 5, 2007

I had to take Sweetums to Lewes this morning to have a polyp removed. Poor baby. I am so good to him. I even got up a 5AM to mix his last cocktail for him. Then I went back to bed until 8AM. Well, you know. I had to drive. I needed my rest. When we got there, I sat with him for about 15 minutes. I didn’t want to eat in front of him so I rode over to Rehobeth Beach and had breakfast. After doing a little shopping, he called and said he was done. Snow was starting to fall and I really wanted to get home. We live about 45 minutes away. This is only the second time that it has snowed since we moved to Delaware. I know how to handle my vehicle, but I don’t trust others.

The cats had a great time. Little Maude was out the longest. The Myuush went out, walked around and came back in. Zippo spent a long time cleaning his fur. I asked him if he would like a haircut, but he said no, thank you very much.

I finally finished my Equilateral Vest. The yarn I used was heavier and I had to change needle size. Thanks to Lucy Neatby’s instructions, I had no trouble with gauge and the size was right on. I really like her patterns.

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

December 4, 2007

 Now you see it.

 Now you don’t.

Last Saturday, I cut my son’s ponytail off. Even with good hair cutting scissors, it took a while. His hair is like mine, very fine and very thick. It must have taken 100 snips. After I cut it off, I straightened it out as best I could. Sunday, he went to Hair Cuttery to finish the job. I don’t know how it looks now because I had left for Delaware before he went. Jenn saw him yesterday, but he wouldn’t take his hat off so she couldn’t get a good look. I talked to him today and he sounded good so I think he is over the initial shock. Now I have this beautiful pony tail. Should I donate it? Where? I would appreciate any suggestions. I’ll have to keep a piece for myself.
