Got Up Early

June 28, 2013

The long-awaited range hood was to be installed. But he called. He won’t be able to make it until next Tuesday. Argh! All that rearranging for nothing. I even cleaned the toilet. I’ve been grumpy all week. It’s to be expected.

When I was in Bethany, I bought two skeins of  Bombay by Katia.  I’ve been wanting to make my Girlie Summer Socks again.  The pair I have have been through the washer and dryer and still look and feel great.  I was very happy to find two colorways that I liked.

P1050480  Look!  They match!  And I wasn’t even trying.  I knit the Eye of Partridge heel, other wise it’s the same pattern.

P1050487  With the second pair, I went with a ruffle.  I got out Lucy Neatby’s little sock book, Cool Socks, Warm Feet, and found just what I wanted.  Using a little math, I figured I needed to cast on two and one half times as many stitches.  I won’t tell you the rest.  That would be unfair to Lucy.  And I really like her.

P1050488  Here’s a close up.  I used a sixteen inch circular needle to start.  Then, on the decrease round I switched to double points.

I started another pair last night using the Panda Silk I bought at MD Sheep and Wool.  I am trying a new design of my own.  If I am happy with them, I’ll have a new pattern for you to try.

Girlie Socks

The other week, I went shopping with knitting friends.  In Berlin, I bought some more Taiyo sock yarn.

I have made these socks before in Kureyon sock yarn and I really enjoy them.  This time I made them bigger since I wanted them to bag a bit.  The leg is seventy stitches and the foot is sixty-five.  The pattern calls for sixty.  I had to do a little tweaking.  I am very happy with them.  I’ve worn them twice.  They wash beautifully.  As with other Noro, they feel better with every wash.  Now, I’m thinking about going back and getting some more.  They also had some other yarn that I think would be good for socks.

Thinking About Daddy

June 17, 2013

Yesterday, my son called Sweetums to wish him Happy Fathers Day. While they talked about things, I thought about my own father. He died so long ago. He died too young. My son never knew him or my 47 year old daughter. I was seven months pregnant when he died. I was living in California then, and couldn’t even go to his funeral. But, maybe, that’s best. I close my eyes and there he is. He’s got that bad little boy grin. His shirt sleeves are rolled to the elbow. He calls me “Princess”, “Angel”. He makes me feel like the most wonderful person in the world. All the trials and trepidations of the day have melted away and I am content.

Some cats know how to pose.

Others don’t.  Or they just don’t give a shit.  I’m not certain which.

New Socks

June 8, 2013

I picked up the Sock Report last month. There are so very many great patterns that I had a hard time deciding on what to make. I am currently in Summer socks mode. I bought two different sock yarns at Sheep & Wool and I was eager to start.  I got Taiyo sock yarn and Panda silk.  Panda silk makes great socks and they’re completely machine washable and dryable.  I can throw them in the hamper and let Sweetums do what he will with them.  I know.  It’s a scary thought, but this is Sweetums after all.  Where was I?  So I made socks with the Taiyo and I love the lumpy texture and the slow slow color changes.  These socks were great fun to make and now, to wear.  Last Saturday was a knitters day out and I bought another skein at A Little Sheepish in Berlin, but that’s another story.  I have to take pictures first.

P1050459  What do you mean my socks don’t match?  They’re knit from the same skein.  But then, does it really matter?

Current progress on the Welcomes.

P1050450  What do you like?  The one on the right or the one on the left.
