Almost Time for Maryland Sheep and Wool

May 3, 2011

I’m taking Komi knitting patterns class on Thursday and fancy heels on Friday morning.  I have found suitable yarn and needles for my classes without having to buy anything.  I have very few needles in the sizes indicated, but what I found will do.  Most of my needles are smaller(for socks and gloves) or bigger(for sweaters). The same goes for my yarn— a lot of fine and heavy with little in between.  Also, finding white or beige was impossible.  Yellow will have to do.  I’m just not a white or beige person.

Here’s the blue sock.  Not bad for two days.  I’m almost to the hell.  I’ll have to play around with it a bit since there are an odd number of repeats.  The swirls can get confusing.  Next, it’s on to Sock That Rock kits or maybe not.  I need more cotton socks for summer.

I finally remembered to reply to the comment I received on Rue last week.  Have a look.  I really liked it.

Like Father, like son.

Out all night AGAIN!  No wonder she can’t keep her eyes open.  She has only spent the night inside twice in the last ten.

Can I Put my Wool Hats and Gloves Away Yet?

April 28, 2011

Can I put my turtlenecks, fleece tops and cords away?  Can I get out my shorts and sandals?  I hope so.  The last several days makes me want to do it.  But, it’s not May yet.  What to do. What to do.

These days,  the only time I see Flo is when I get up in the morning and at suppertime.   She likes to sleep on the porch furniture at night and in the bushes during the day.  I don’t like her spending the night out, but she doesn’t care.  Don’t tell me to keep her in.  You have never been around this cat when she wants to go OUT!  And it better be NOW!

I finished these yesterday and started another pair today.   I’ve had some blue that is boring, but I found an interesting pattern in More Sensational Socks.  I am thinking about making gloves with this leftover yarn.  They’re always fun to make.  And you don’t have to take off your shoes and socks to try them on.  This can be done at knitting group, but not on the subway.  It’s frowned upon for some reason.  When it gets too hot to knit with wool, I’ll switch to Sockotta yarn.  I’ve four skeins of the stuff and some Panda Cotton somewhere.

Cora has been trying to teach Rue back stretches, but he’s not interested.

He would rather hang out with his buddy, Gus.  And what are they looking at?

Is that Olive over there?

There You Go

January 15, 2011

The fit is good.  It goes with my Stars sweater and my Eeyore jacket.  What more do I want.  Oh yeah.  I love worms.

I started another hat.  This one is orange.  I actually own an orange coat.  I am using the Sideways Grande Hat from Boutique Knits.  My yarn seems to be bulkier than what they used.  I’ve had to make a few changes.  I should be finished in another day or two.

Flo is not at all happy about this.

Insanity and Organization

January 11, 2011

I had to do it.  I kept thinking about all that yarn in those cardboard boxes that I couldn’t see.  I knew there was really good stuff in there.  But I didn’t know what was where.  I wound up filling fifteen clear containers.  Sweetums was very helpful and even repositioned some of the shelves to efficiently accommodate the containers.   I kept out yarn for four planned sweaters for 2011.  The job took about three days.  I was surprised at the amount of Colinette I had.  Colinette anyone? I could make you such a deal!

I still need to organize the rolling carts.  That’s where I plan to put all the smaller hanks and skeins.  There are too many little drawers and not enough big ones.  One section of twelve small drawers has become my new needle case.

I spent yesterday organizing my needles.  When we were pulling out yarn, Sweetums found the rest of them.  I knew I had more.  I just didn’t know where.  I dumped all of them onto the dining room table and arranged them according to size.  First I did the circulars and then the double points.  I managed to get most into their original plastic sleeves.  I only had a few of each left over.  Starting with the largest size, I looked at each one and determined which were worth keeping.  I got rid of all the Pony Pearl(poor join, stiff wire, came apart) and most of the Susan Bates(kept the 11″ ones).  I even have some Addi Turbo in there.  I also added all my old metal double-pointed needles.  I’m thinking about adding the large sizes since I haven’t used them in years.  But.  You never know.

I finally finished the cloche.  I had to add the contrast band and flower.  It didn’t look right without them.  It fits well, coming down over my ears for those cold windy walks along the river.  And I have almost finished the tam.  Here, again, I had it half made and took it apart.  I didn’t like the band.  I should finish it tonight and might have a picture tomorrow, if I blog.  Next up: an orange hat.  But, wait a minute, I still have some of this yarn left.  Maybe I’ll make a pair of mittens, too.

Getting Ready to go for a Walk

December 16, 2010

It was 19 degrees when I got up.  By the time I was finally ready to go, it was up to 25.  I don’t think it’s been up to freezing the last few days.   I got out a turtleneck, sweatshirt and jeans.  After I was dressed, I realized I should put on my silk long johns.  Off comes my jeans and my handknit double-knit socks.  I started to pull up the long johns and they caught on my poor too-dry skin.  Out comes the body cream.  Now my long johns are kind of stuck to my legs.  Then I decide that my heels  feel awful so they get lathered with foot gunk.  Well, I can’t possibly put on my nice handmade wool double-knit socks now, can I?  I dug out a pair of my old Orton socks.  While I had the body cream out, I figured I might as well do my arms, so off comes the turtleneck and sweatshirt.  Half an hour later, I’m finally ready to go.  By this time, Sweetums has fallen asleep and the dog has died from utter frustration, but I drag them out anyway.  I sure as shit wasn’t going to let all this preparation go to waste.

There was no wind so we walked down to the river.  I was able to sit out on the pier for several minutes.  It was so beautiful  and so wondrously quiet.  The sky was completely overcast.  It looked and felt like snow was coming.  We saw the first flakes while we were walking back and now we have about an inch on the ground.

Today’s lesson:  As the outside temperature decreases, the number of pee balls in the litter pan increases.

I’ve made decent progress on my hat, although, I am not certain in what direction.  I’m just letting it talk to me.  I hope it knows what it is talking about.

Yesterday

November 8, 2010

I was going to blog.  Really, I was.  When I sat down with my laptop. my mind went blank.  And what was I going to talk about?  I’m still not certain.  It was the first day of Standard TIme so I was up an hour earlier.  I had time  for a nice breakfast, a walk, some reading, some knitting and a long hot shower before leaving for knitting group.  I still left early.  I needed gas and I wanted to stop at Staples to get a book spiralled.  Is that a word?  I don’t know anymore.  There are so many new ones out there.  The stop at Staples was a waste of my time.  They said it would be about an hour before they could help me and that I could leave my book.  I said, “No thanks.  I’ll be back in two weeks.”  They said they were always very busy on the weekend.  This is a lie because I always come on Sundays before my group starts.  And the job they were doing?  It seemed to be watching the customer operate one of the big machines.  Huh?

Group, as usual, was a lot of fun.  I wore my new socks.  I love them.  They are so me.  Betty started talking about my socks so I flipped my clogs off and pointed to my feet.  She started laughing.  She didn’t realize that I was wearing them.  She’s one of those people who you want to make laugh just to hear her.

Maria made NO progress on the fringe of her shawl.  She kept complaining that it didn’t look right.  She kept losing the yarn overs.  I hope I got her on the right track.  I told her she can’t do anything new until she finishes the fringe.  Fat chance of that happening.  She’s all ready planning her next shawl and she has the yarn for it.  I really like the pattern she found.  Maybe I’ll do it, too.

At this point I was going to show you what I have started.  Unfortunately, my laptop and my camera are not on speaking terms with each other today.  This has happened before, but I do not currently feel like fixing it.  But there is always cat pictures.

This is Miss Kitty.  She is a Certified Bed Cat.  She will sleep with you every night when you visit my girlfriend in Bismarck.  And, believe me, you need at least one of these when you go there.

And here’s Flo.  She missed my lap so much while I was gone.  She’s been trying very hard to make up for it.

And here’s Cora enjoying the fire.  She didn’t even realize that I was gone.

Just a Common Tabby Cat My Foot!

September 24, 2010

She is making me crazy.  From  spending two nights in a row out to having to get stitches.  I keep telling her she is just a common tabby cat and she can easily be replaced, but does she listen?  No!  She just goes out and gets in more trouble.  Then she curls up around your neck, purrs loudly and kneads you while getting blood all over your favorite Tigger shirt while waiting at the vets.  She knows Mommy will make everything better.  So yesterday, she was scrubbed, shaved and stitched and feeling pretty pooky.   She doesn’t care much for her medicine, but she is still pretty weak.  In a few days, we’ll probably have a hell of a time getting it in her.  She is getting better.  She used the potty this morning and walked to the back bathroom to get a drink of water.  She’s back to sleeping in her cubby in the junk room.  I don’t think she’ll be getting in our bed for a while or pretending she’s another cookie jar on top of my kitchen cabinets.  And where are these stitches?  I wanted to take a picture, but she was too embarrassed and curled her tail around them  I think she called me a pervert.  Her diction is off due to her medication.  I said it was for research.  She told me I was full of it. I promised I wouldn’t say, but I will tell you this.  She won’t be holding her tail high for a while, especially when she running away from something with very sharp claws.  And it’s a good thing her medicine gives her loose BMs.   You know, she wouldn’t have these problems if she would just come in with the others.  But no, she has to stay out and play with her “other” friends.  Bold words for a Common Tabby Cat.

It’s a good thing she’s been fixed.

Back from Reisterstown

August 27, 2010

I wanted to blog while I was there.  I really did.  I probably would have if my son would just get wi-fi.  I could sit at the kitchen table in good light  and tap away.  But he says no.  Some of his friends would never leave.  I understand.  He plugged my laptop into his desktop so I could have internet, but the light is not good and I couldn’t get comfortable.  He did have some really great movies.  Like The Wolfman.  I got goose pimples in the first minute.  I loved it!  It’s not for kids, my daughter, or my husband.

Speaking of my daughter, I called her when I got there.  She was on the corner at the gas station so she came over.  And she came bearing gifts–five to be exact.  What could be better than Disney antenna toppers?  I told Doug that I can never buy a car without an antenna.

I came home to dust everywhere.  I don’t care.  Progress is being made.  That’s what is important.  When my neighbor had an addition done, she cleaned everything every evening.  She says she feels sorry for me.  I guess she assumes that I do the same thing.  Doesn’t she know me by now?  The toilets don’t look bad.  What more do you want?

Here’s my new closet.  It runs the length of the new room minus the door of course.

Here I am standing inside the closet.   See my rolling cart?  I have six and I can ten in here.  There will be shelves all along the wall.  I wonder how long it will take me to fill it?

Flo is always helpful.

Coraline Gloves for Carolyn

August 17, 2010

Do you have any idea how HAPPY I am that are finished?  I spent TWO DAYS weaving in the ends!  That’s 50 per glove!   I had a h**l of a time with the closure at the missing finger with all the color changes and stupid ends.  Usually I put the glove on when weaving.  Since I didn’t want to cut my ring finger off, I had to improvise.  I used an Emory board, a fat ballpoint pen and a tube of lip balm, but working between the pinkie and middle was still difficult.

If you are interested in making your own, I’ll be putting up a new page.  I’ve already started it, so it won’t be too long.

I will be starting her third pair of gloves this evening.  One color this time.   Then, I think I’ll make two pairs of socks.  I have got to make myself a pair of Caroline gloves, but with fingering weight.    It should be Autumn by then so I’ll probably start a sweater.  But, will I be able to get to my yarn by then?

new kitchen wall

Here is the new kitchen wall.  Doug called the cabinet people today and someone is coming by tomorrow.  Yeah!

See the little closet?  Flo thinks that it’s a good place to keep her Skunky.  She has a lot of trouble finding a place to keep him.

Only A Nightie

July 18, 2010

I’ve been sewing for nearly sixty years.  The pattern that I made was from a nightie I had bought about fifteen years ago when I weighed about fifty pounds more than I do now.  I’m not worried about proper fit.  I know it’s comfortable.  I’ve made it six or eight times.  Precision doesn’t matter.  It’s just a nightie.

I started these socks last night.  It’s Feather and Fan from Socks Socks Socks.  I used Sockotta again.  I think this will be my last pair of cotton socks for a while.  I want to make my Red Bird kit from May and another pair for an old friend.  I also need to make a couple of pair pf gloves.

Flo thinks she’s hiding.
