It’s Snowing

February 21, 2008
Snow started to fall about two hours ago. Maude and Zip went out and played on the deck for a while. Now, they are both asleep. It’s a typical light snow with less than an inch so far–just the right amount for silly kitties. Gus thinks they are nuts. He goes out and barks at them. They run by and swat him on the legs. He just mumbles and comes back in.

I got a nice note from Ellen in Salt Lake City. She made my entrelac hat pattern. Here’s a picture.

She had nothing but good things to say about my pattern. I’m so happy!

I have finished the thumb increases on the first glove and I’m ready to start the main part of the second mitten. I want to get these done as quickly as possible so I can make something BIG.

I really should spend more time on sprucing up my blog. I look at other blogs and see all kinds of things that I could do, but once I am done with my blog , I’m ready to get up and do something else. One of these days I’ll make myself do it.

Mild Today

February 18, 2008
When I went walking this morning, it was cold and windy. Now, at 8:30PM, it’s 57. Of course, now, it’s too dark to walk.

One mitten is done. I may finish the top differently. I ‘ll decide when I get to the top of the other one. I’ve got most of the ribbing done on the second one. I should have the baby blanket finished in a few days. The top is mostly quilted.

I had lots of cat help. After he finished cleaning himself, he gave Gus a bath.

Gus tried to clean Zip in return.

Saturday

February 16, 2008
The commentator at the local National Public Radio station is awful. He’s the comic relief between The Metropolitan Opera and Prairie Home Companion. At least there is an NPR station in this area. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway.

Back of mitten.

I’m ready to start the thumb. Maybe, I’ll get to it tonight. Last night, we went out with friends for dinner. We all had scallops with crabmeat. It was so good. We talked for a good while when we came back so I started the gloves. I can’t follow this mitten pattern and a conversation at the same time. Besides, Elvis was in my lap and Zip was in Linda’s.

New Toilet

February 12, 2008
We have a new toilet in the little bathroom. You can put in whatever your body manages to produce. You pull the handle and WOOOOSH, it is gone! No more, “Maybe if I flush it a few more times,” or “Where’s the liquid soap?” And the lid slowly lowers itself when you give it a little nudge. How cool is that?

The mittens are moving right along.

And I put this on my new sweatshirt. I loved the color. Doesn’t it look like the cat has been in the catnip? Who changed the sizes when I wasn’t looking? I don’t buy clothes much anymore. But I would like to know why I had to buy a size larger when I had lost 30 lbs. At least they didn’t mess with underwear. My new panties are a size smaller. Yes!

I haven’t been out of the house today. It’s too cold and windy. The cats have been driving me crazy with going in and out and in and out and in every five minutes. I could wring their necks.

Spring is in the Air

February 10, 2008

Our Canada geese laid claim to the island today. They seem to think that it’s that time of the year again. Didn’t they check the forecast? It is supposed to get down to 17 degrees tonight. This will be the third year they have taken it over. Last April when the eggs were hatching, it was in the pouring rain. Linda and I watched with our binoculars from inside our homes. The next day it was sunny and they brought the babies over to our yards. Maude thought, “Breakfast!”. The adults had other ideas. She picked right up on that and made a beeline for the house.

I have started Christine’s mittens. It’s fun so far. I am using the needles I bought from Knit Picks. I really like them. They are very smooth like my old Baleen needles, but do not bend like them. They seem stronger than my other wooden needles, Most of which are Brittany. I tried Lantern Moon, but was not happy and not worth the price.

Zippo printed the pattern for me. He can be quite handy at times.

I’ll probably start Nancy’s gloves later this week. I should have had this contest earlier because she is going to North Dakota this week. Maybe I will put little cables up the fingers.

Tell me. Should I join a Red hat club? I discovered that there are about half a dozen within ten miles of here. I am not sure if I have a Red Hat personality. I do, however, own a red hat.

Nancy and Christine

February 5, 2008

I am really going to enjoy making the gloves and mittens for you two. Nancy picked a yarn that is fingering weight which is good because she lives in Phoenix where it doesn’t get really cold. Maybe I will make something lacy. Christine said to surprise her. So many things come to mind that I just don’t know what I am going to do. She has so much snow that she saw a horse drawn sleigh go by her house. I figure I could make anything because she probably needs mittens year round. But, seriously folks, I am thinking about doing twined knitting with some Noro orphans that I have lying around.

I only had to wear a sweater when we walked this morning. We walked way down the river. Gus smelled plenty of deer. I finally had to give him to Doug. He was so excited that he wouldn’t listen. I think he will always be a silly puppy. Not at all like my serious German Shepherds. Kevin doesn’t mind.

Jealous Dog

February 2, 2008

This morning, as we were walking down the road, our neighbor, Linda, joined us with her dog, Sir. Gus was so upset that you could almost hear him muttering under his breath. He and Sir play together across our yards. He likes Sir, but this was his walk and he didn’t like any intruders. He walked along with his head down and his ears back until we crossed the road to the horse farm. Linda and Sir went on down the road because Sir does not like horses.

Gus leads such a rough life.

I put Zip’s medicine in his canned food last night and this morning. He is such a glutton that he didn’t even notice it. I didn’t think he would. I had tasted it and it has a mild bitter taste.

I didn’t do much of anything constructive today. Linda came over to rant about Mike, her imbecile asshole neighbor. It seems their flower-box is about two inches on his property. I told her she was lucky to have two in one. At my other house, I had an imbecile on one side and an asshole on the other. At least she gets to deal with two at the same time.

He Lived Through It

January 31, 2008
We managed to get Zippo’s medicine in him. He’s a big baby and loved to cuddle. I went and filled the dropper and Doug held him tighter. I came over, grabbed his nose and squirted down his throat. He ran off, but he was back to cuddle in a little while.

I finished one end of the wimple. See the little picots?

I took a smaller needle and ran it through the first row of stitches. You have to be careful not to catch the waste yarn.

Then I pulled the waste yarn out with no problems and untied it.

Now, I am ready to do the picot edge and it’ll be done.

Zippo has a Boo-Boo

January 30, 2008
Zippo went out early this morning to peruse his territory and he must have had a run in with a usurper. Doug was playing with him later when he noticed the blood. Cats can get infections too easily, so I got dressed and took him to the vet. We had to wait a while because the vet was going on vacation Friday and every animal in Seaford was there. He got a shot and antibiotics to take everyday. This is going to be fun. Fortunately, I have a great syringe for this sort of thing. I got a lot of knitting done while I was done so maybe I will get the wimple done in another day.

Poor baby!

I was asked what a snot vampire was. This is a long story. Many years ago, I was reading a collection of short stories. The editor(producer, publisher–I don’t remember) asked various science fiction writers for off the wall short stories. I believe it was Harlan Ellison who sent a story about a snot vampire. It was so gross that the editor would not publish it and asked for something else. I got the feeling that he knew Ellison sent it on purpose. Since then, I often say I need a snot vampire whenever I have a runny nose or sinus infection. When I mentioned it to my then boyfriend (current husband), he was suitably impressed that I read that sort of thing. So, yesterday, I went to see the doctor (snot vampire) and he gave me a prescription for my sinus infection (bit me on the face and sucked the snot right out of me). I hope your imagination is as good as mine.

The Door into Summer

January 29, 2008
Elvis thought he had found the door into summer today. It is 53 degrees. He walked around a little and came back in and curled up on the heat register. He was probably a grizzly bear in his last life or plans on being one in the next. He’s not sure anymore. Every morning he wakes up and starts purring. He is so happy to be alive.

Zippo knows he needs extra attention.

Hey! You! Get over here and get this fire started!

Thanks to Sandy for giving me these thoughts.
