Plumber

July 8, 2008

The plumber showed up around 10:30 this morning.  I was glad because I was pretty bleary eyed from reading.  I had put another border on my quilt earlier and I couldn’t make up my mind about the binding.  I pulled out everything that was usable and threw it on the table and left them there until one of them started talking.  Unfortunately, several started talking at once, so I left them all there to fight amongst themselves.  I am hoping to have a winner be tomorrow but you never know about fabric.  They are just like gas ovens.   I took my knitting and went out on the porch deck–whatever that thing is.  I wanted to weed, but I didn’t want to get sweaty.  We have a hose going to the neighbor’s, but I don’t need to be greedy.  It is Kevin’s birthday and he wants to go to the Mexican restaurant in town for dinner.  They are at their trailer for the week.  Doug got him two Wave Birds? on eBay and I got him an Ugly Poe doll and Ugly Poe key chain and a Ugly OX T-shirt.  And if you don’t know what Uglies are, then shame on you.

So the plumber says the pump is shot.  That’s not hard to believe.  The original owner kept receipts for EVERYTHING and there was no pump.  He is coming back on Wednesday to do it.  Then I plan on doing my best to wear it out.

I Just Wanted a Table for my Deck

July 5, 2008

Is that too much to ask?  I have this tiny round thing from before we had the deck enlarged.  I would like one about card table size that I can leave outside.  I have been looking for about two years.  If I found something close at a reasonable price, I’d buy it.  There is entirely too much cutesy out there.  It’s enough to make me puke.  And I don’t want a hole in the middle.  The sale person says it’s for your umbrella.  I don’t have an umbrella so he tries to show me umbrellas.  I told him I usually go inside when it rains.  He didn’t know what to say.  I left.

Stitches, Ducks, Quilt

June 20, 2008

I am still trying to decide on Stitches.  I have read through every class description that looks the least bit interesting and I have narrowed it down to five.  I want to actually LEARN something if I am going to spend the money.  Some teachers do the same thing year after year.  There are others that I would like to go to, but the class description sounds so uninspiring.  I saw a class on Saturday and Sunday that I’m sure I’ll like, but I also want one on Thursday or Friday so i can go to Werner’s for lunch.  Hey!  I have my priorities!  They’re not open on weekends.baby ducks

These three have been hanging around for the last couple of days.  They are fun to watch.  I only see them when the tide is low.  I want to get a picture of them splashing in the water, but I haven’t had any success yet.  The creek doesn’t look like much when the tide is low, but that’s when all the creatures come out.

I got the book and now I have the fabric so I guess I’ll have to make one.

Stitches?

June 19, 2008

I am trying to make up my mind about Stitches in November.  One thing aggravates me.  No. Two things aggravate me.  Lucy Neatby is shown with the teachers, but she is not listed as teaching.  I had to print out part of the brochure in order to see who was teaching what on Saturday and Sunday.  They could have made it more “user friendly”.  I found my self constantly jumping back and forth.  I gave myself a headache.

A wild turkey came walking down my side yard.  It stood there and looked out at the water.  I wish I had my camera out with me, but he wasn’t there long.  Gus saw him and started barking.  That scared the bejeezes out of him and he flew off the terrace and fast walked across the yards until he went into the bushes at the end house.  Maude was smelling where he stood so I guess Gus scared the crap out of him.

I bought some perenials yesterday.  They are going out front in the courtyard.  I needed to weed out there, so now I have a reason.  I got most of it done, so I can plant tomorrow.  I also need to work around some of the flowers outside of the fence.  I’m going to have to wander around Jeff’s one of these days.  I want something exciting to put in one corner.  It’s gets sun most of the day and watered regularly.new baby

For some reason, these guys didn’t appreciate the sprinklers.  Usually, when anything bothers the geese, they herd the kids into the creek.  This pair always walks junior into the bushes.  It’s a good thing they live here year round.  Otherwise, this little guy doesn’t have much of a chance.

I also got my hip x-rayed today.  Next week, I’m going up to Dover for my annual poke.

Ham Salad and Popovers

June 14, 2008

Doug is still pooky.  ham saladSo, we’re didn’t go out tonight.  Hopefully, we can go out tomorrow.  He’sbeen sleeping a lot today so he is probably going to be up all night.  He ate a good supper.  I made ham salad and popovers.  The popovers didn’t popover very much, but they were still good.  I had a ham last week, and even though I took a huge chunk to my son, there is still a lot left.  Here’s what I do:

  • 2 cups cubed cooked ham
  • 1+1/2 cups fresh (raw) peas
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 4oz. chopped Cheddar (one cup)
  •  About 3/4 cup Miracle Whip or mayonnaise with some mustard or salsa Verde

Mix and refrigerate for a few hours.  Get out your cookbook or go on line and look up popovers.  I think I have used at least four different recipes and they have all tasted good.  When the popovers are done and they have cooled a bit, fill them with the ham salad.  Often popovers will have a hole in the bottom.  If not, poke one and stuff it in.

Makes 4 to 6 servings so if there is only two of you, fill as you eat.  Filled ones aren’t so good after a day or two.  The picture above are our leftovers.  These also make a nice “grown-up” food for kids parties.

Cactus

June 4, 2008

cactusIt always amazes me when I look at this cactus.  It gets the sun most of the day and the irrigation system doesn’t come this close to the road.  We don’t do a thing with it.  When I lived in California, many homes had cactus.  I never expected to see it around here, but I have since seen it in a few other yards around here.  cactus

My socannek club came.  As you can see, it is not my favorite color, but the socks will look good with jeans.  I like the pattern better, too.  Again, it was printed with a matrix dot printer so I went ahead and made a copy before I spill orange juice on it.  It’s Anne yarn from Schaeffer Yarn which I have used before to make a shawl in the old shale pattern.  It really is nice yarn and I know it will make my feet happy.  I think I figured out why I don’t like blue.  I look like my mother when I am wearing it.  It’s scary.

Science Fiction

May 25, 2008

I think I was thirteen when I started reading science fiction.  It was summer. I was bored and the stuff my friends were reading was awful enough to gag a maggot.  I found a book of short stories.  I am a terribly slow reader and it took me several weeks to finish.  There were many words that I didn’t understand, but we had a three volume dictionary.  Daddy kept telling me to look it up so I probably actually learned something that summer.  I read most of Asimov.  I don’t remember if I read anyone in particular after that.  I tried reading Dune twice.  I couldn’t get into it.  It was boring.  And I don’t care for fantasy.  Hobbits and fairies don’t do a think for me.  Lois Bujold’s Miles books were great, but her new series isn’t.  I like Anne MacCaffney’s Pern books and some of the others.  They are a pleasant read, but predictable.  Oh! I forgot Terry Pratchett.  I think my son and husband have read all of his and I have read a few.  But, like I said, I read slowly.  I do, however, get a lot out of each book I read.

Murder mysteries are fun to read. I often figure things out.  That’s probably comes from reading Nannie’s True Detective magazines.  I am very observant.  I notice things that most people don’t.  I also find things.  My husband can’t see the forest for the trees.  I’m always telling him where to find his glasses, his wallet or the doohickey that fits into the what-zit.  I tell you.  It’s all those True Detective magazines.

More on Not Tested on Animals

May 22, 2008

I found face wash and face cream that I can use at Rite Aid.  I am so glad.  I was almost out.  It’s Booths.  Walmart stopped carrying Booths which I found most aggravating.  I had a go to the bank and I thought that since it was on the way, I’d have a look.   I also discovered that St. Ives doesn’t animal test, but they don’t have face cream or cleanser.  I went on line, but the Booths website was down for some reason.  I found another site called Kiss My Face which looked promising.  They have a trial size package which I’ll probably get.  Well, I’ve got to run.  Here’s some pictures to entertain you. sleevessox

End of an Era

May 20, 2008

cat mugcat cupI was deeply saddened last night when I poured myself some juice into my favorite cup and saw it start to leak out the bottom.  Originally I had four.  It’s just the right size and easy to hold and the art work is great.  The Chesapeake Cat club is gone, but not forgotten.

kauniIn other news, I found the pattern that I am going to make with my Kauni yarn.  I had forgotten that it was one of those little half sheet pamphlets.  Now, when I start it is an entirely different question.
