My Son made his Girlfriend a Dress

September 14, 2011

He called last week and asked me to bring my sewing machine.  Did he have some mending?  No.  He wanted to make his girlfriend a dress.

“Why?”

“I just do.  Will you teach me?”

A hesitant, “OK”.

Friday evening, we went shopping.  He found a  pattern, a simple wrap dress.  The fabric he fell in love with was a shiny polyester.  Not a good idea for a first project, but I couldn’t sway him.  We also got interfacing and thread and headed home.

Saturday, we cut and started sewing.  My son is 6′ 5″.  It was easier for him to sit and cut.

Even Biscuit was amazed at his progress!

And, here we have the finished dress.  He was rather pleased with himself.  And I cannot say that I was not proud of him.  OK.  I will admit that I did some of the harder parts, but it’s mostly his work.  We only had two days.  And, you know what?  He wants to do it again!

Going to Reistestown for a Few

September 8, 2011

I haven’t been all summer so it’s time.  I hope it’s not raining like this tomorrow.  Ordinarily I would have all ready left, but I have an appointment with the GP in the morning.

My son wants sewing lessons.  We’ll be looking at patterns and buying fabric, cutting and sewing.  He has my old Brother, but I’m bringing my Sapphire anyway.  I am not certain what all is at the house so I’ll bring some basic notions.  This should be fun.  I’ll let you know.

I’m trying to picture him making his own placemats.

Sweetums Needed New Shoes

August 25, 2011

So we drove over to the Rehoboth outlets.  I wanted to look into the Dooney Bourke and, of course, Fossil.  We were on Route 9 to get to Route 1, when we came upon signs that said Detour and Shoulder Work Ahead.  Only it wasn’t.  It was Extreme Makeover.  I was surprised at how much work had been accomplished and how well organized eveything looked.  I believe they started on Monday.  That’s a really big soup kitchen.  It was a little slow due to rubber neckers.  But what do you expect?  This is LSD you know.  Around here, when a workman says he’ll have it done by Christmas, you need to ask which Christmas.

Further on down the road, we stopped at the dairy farm and got chocolate shkes with black raspberry ice cream.  It was so good that I got brain freeze.  It’s a good thing I wasn’t driving.

Sweetums only likes one kind of Reeboks.  Yeah.  I know.  Boring.  But I can’t point the finger.  I only wear Haflingers.  He parked by Fossil and walked over to Reeboks.  He was finshed by the time I came out of Fossil.  I bought a change puse.  I didn’t see anything else interesting.  I went to Dooney & Bourke and he followed me.  Here, again, I saw several things, but that was ‘just right’.  Sweetums liked a red suede, but it wasn’t quite right.    He is now looking at purses on-line for me.  That’s why I call him Sweetums.

Weeds: There’s an APP for That

August 8, 2011

After hitting END, wait about an hour.  A vehicle appears in your driveway.  Late the next day, all the weeds are gone.  It’s a miracle.  There was one little problem.  Sweetums programmed it to remove the ferns.  I didn’t discover it until it was too late.  What do I do?  Is there an app for butt boils?

It even weeded around the volunteer Impatiens.

And whatever these are.

I still have to chop at some bushes.  They’re blocking my view of the water.  I attacked them three or four years ago.  Sweetums almost had a heart attack.  Well, they grew back.  And I’m going to do it again.

Blogging When Grumpy—-Not A Good Idea

August 6, 2011

Is it the arthritis?  Is it the weather?  Is it the cataract?  Is it natural?  Well.  Yes.  Actually, it’s good to rant and rave.  It feels good to put it all into words.  It feels real good.  Just don’t publish it.  You’ll regret it later.  Enough!

I’ve been making hats.  I have several single skeins of lovely yarn.  I have had about six thousand hits on Victoria’s Cloche so it made sense to use that pattern.

I loosely followed the slouchy tam on the other two.  I saw a hat with a cabled brim so I tried it.  I’m not certain that I like it.  It’s too hard to see for the work involved.  There’s a couple more to go, then I’m back to socks.  I’m three pair behind schedule.

I also want to thank Sweetums for being —- sweet through all my grumpiness.

I Was Happy to See

July 14, 2011

The wood duck was out this morning with the kids.  I counted at least six before they were too far down the creek to see.  There was a wood duck house on a pole in the creek for several years, but it fell over last year.  A neighbor had put it up, but he died a few years ago.  He was quite a character.  He knew how to enjoy life.

Tuesday, my son came for a little visit and brought his girlfriend.  It was Sweetums first time seeing her.  They both took the week off.  She is small and cute with freckles.  She talks a lot, but that may be nervousness.   She calls my son, Dear, which grated on Sweetums’ nerves.  I’m not certain what she sees in my son.  He can be as irritating as his father.  I told her needs to beat him regularly.

Some Things Take Some Getting Used To

July 11, 2011

Take Gus’s new leach.  Sweetums likes it.  Gus likes it.  I don’t care for it.  It has a retractable cord.  It’s hard to hold.  I always lock it to about six feet.  It helps my balance.  Gus understands.  He’s a good boy when I have the lead.  We bought it mainly to enable Gus to get in the river.  He likes to walk around, get wet and drink the water, but he panics if he slips.  He is NOT a swimmer.  I honestly think he feels better when he is in the water now.  Before, we would let him loose, but only when the tide was low.  We worried about the roots and the old fallen down concrete  boat ramp.  Now he’s a happy boy.

Then there’s the new mouse.  Sweetums got it for my laptop.  It’s wireless, but so are the others.  It’s just a tad too big.  It’s hard to hold.  It’s amazing how something a mere 1/4 inch bigger can be such a pain. And it’s a little slow.  So I got the old one for my laptop.  I’m so happy.  It works so much better.  Sweetums is so nice.

I think I am going to be getting used to a new standing mixer soon.  The motor is acting weird.  I was making my son “The Cake” for his birthday and it was having trouble.  It’s only thirty years old.  About four years ago, I bought some parts for it.   That helped.  I can’t  knead dough with it anymore and I can’t find the food processor, just the blades.  I guess I had better start looking.  Ugh.

Did you notice that I made it through this post without mentioning yarn or cats?

Is It Dinner When You Eat at 3PM?

July 1, 2011

Yesterday, I had a roaring headache by 4PM.  Trying to cook was impossible.  I wanted to hide in the dark in the bathroom, but Sweetums and Frank were working on it.  Everywhere else was too bright.  I had to change my white socks.  They seemed to be glowing.  This happens sometimes.

So, today I started cutting my vegetables around 2PM.  I had two left-over pork chops and Sweetums loves stir-fry.  Then, I thought why not go ahead and fix it now.  I can warm it up later.  I hear, “What cha doing?”  Sweetums started fixing rice.  Neither of us had had any lunch.  So supper/dinner was at 3PM.  I guess we are turning into old farts.

Speaking of bathrooms….

I’m going to miss that red shag carpeting.

Why does spell check accept ‘cha’ and not ‘Sweetums’?  And why isn’t there a personal dictionary for storage?

Decisions, Decisions

June 8, 2011

My friend, Melissa, sent me a link for entrelac socks the other day.  She wanted to know if i would help her if needed.  I took one look at the pattern and I knew that I had to make them.  We are going to start a knit along in about ten days.  I need to finish the pair I’m currently working on.  I honestly thought I would get all caught up on my club socks.  HA!  Trying to decide on the yarn has not been easy.  Originally, I thought it would be simple.  I’ve got four skeins of Sockotta.  Summer is coming.  No. It’s here.  It’s 93 out front.  Anyway, I started pulling out yarn.

I believe  all of these would look good.  See what I mean?  I’m making myself crazy again.  Here’s the link: http://knitting.dreamwidth.org/54196.html.  You may join us if you like.

Hot and Humid…..and Feeling Old

May 31, 2011

It was almost 80 when we got up.  Barf.  I stumbled around and dressed while Sweetums made coffee.  I drank half a cup before we left for our walk.  You know, I will never understand why my children don’t drink coffee.  It amazes me that they can function in the morning without it.  It’s not that they don’t have jobs.  It must be nice.

Where was I?  Gus, as usual, was ready to go.  I could whisper,”walk” at 3AM when he is sound asleep and that dog would be up and out the door in a flash.   He spent a good deal of time in the river up to his belly, walking around and drinking the water.  I should get a longer leash for the summer so he can go out further.

I felt like dying or sleeping, when I got back.   Pain woke me up twice during the night.  My other  hip was bothering me and my knees, as usual.  What did I do yesterday?  Nothing out of the ordinary.  OK.  Enough whining.

My new phone will not fit in my little carriers.  It’s too skinny and too long.  I need to make new ones.   They’re fun to make, although, digging through my fabric stash can be downright scary.

I have to finish this first.  I haven’t gotten much work done on it due to the nice weather.  Now, it’s too hot out and it’s really coming together.  The cutter has been a big help.  I always feel good when I complete a project.

Here’s Cora, holding down the dining room table.
