First Day Out

March 9, 2009

With the beautiful weather, we felt it was time for Olive to venture outside.  We left the screens open at little cat width and before long she tried the great outdoors.  She was very nervous and never left the deck.  She went in and out several times, but only for a few minutes each time.p1010994

Zip, on the other hand, had a great time.  It was so very nice not to have snow squishing between his toes with every step.p1010996

He checked the neighbor’s shed.  He can’t resist an open door.

What Happened to Jimmy’s Grille?

March 8, 2009

We went there last night expecting to have another great meal like we had last month.  Boy, were we surprised!  Actually, I now wonder if the place was sold.  I think the cook used to work at MacDonald’s and it must have been the waitress’s first day.  The crab-cakes were more filler than crab-meat, the shrimp and scallops were overcooked and too few for the amount they were charging.  We were half finished our meal when the waitress got around to bringing the seafood and tartar sauce and Worcestershire.  And she never asked about dessert.

Today was an absolutely beautiful day.  I spent all afternoon sitting on the deck and knitting.  I took lots of pictures, but I put them on the other computer and then deleted from my camera.  You’ll have to wait until tomorrow, maybe.   It was Olive’s first time outside.  So, I took a picture of my sock progress just for you.

Happy to be Home

March 7, 2009

I love my children, but I am so happy to be back home.  I worry about them.  I’ll be glad when Win finds a job that he really likes instead of “just a job”.   Jenn has been having trouble with her periods.  Dr. T retired a couple years ago, but she has finally found someone else who gives her the care that we were so used to having with Dr. T.  He’s also a Hopkins doctor.  I’ll probably go back in a few weeks.

Here’s the yarn that I bought from Enchanted Knoll Farm in Maine.  It came when I left.  My not certain what I will make with it, but I really am very pleased with it.  It has a great feel and the colors are  so much better than this picture.

The heel is finished and I’m coming down to the toes.  I’m expecting my other sock club any day and I brought back sewing, knitting and crocheting to do.  My daughter can sew, but my machines do so much more than hers.  John keeps taking her fleece throw so she bought a piece for him and wants me to finish it the way I did hers.  She also wants me to change the sleeves on her tunic.  I  have a knit shirt from Win with some strange holes.  I guess it beats catching turtles for my grandson.

The snow is just about gone.  Each day has been getting a little warmer and I’m hoping to be able to sit outside this weekend.  I don’t think this is yet the beginning of Spring.  030209-050

It Snowed

March 3, 2009

030209-016We had about four inches and it never got above freezing.  Zip went out, but the snow was too deep for him to get anywhere.  At least I didn’t have to out in it.

I worked on my second sock this morning.  I switched patterning on this one.  I keep having to take out stitches because I forget what I am doing.  I finally had the sense to copy the pattern and color the stitches and things are going better.030209-0262

Cats Who Paint

It has taken them two days and they still aren’t finished.  We had to move all the furniture, get out the ladder and open the can.  They are also not very good at pouring and we had to clean up a lot of footprints.  Doug had to hold up Zip so he could reach the high spots.

I think he’s satisfied.

A Nice Day

February 7, 2009

p1010744I actually got to sit outside and do some knitting.  I finished my black socks last night so I started on a bag for my daughter.  The bag is from Beth and the yarn is from Knit Picks.  It is called Telemark, 100% Peruvian wool.  It is tightly spun which is good for a bag, but I don’t think I would want to make a sweater with it.

The Mitts are Finished

February 5, 2009

Notice I said “finished”, not “done” as in baked in the oven.  Actually, they could stand some heat.  They are a little big.  So I put them on and washed the dishes and gave them a good scrubbing.  The cuffs are the right size so I had to be careful.  Here they are pre-wash.

Can you see the difference in the thumbs?  The left thumb (bottom) was knit with the main color in my left hand and the right with contrasting color in my right hand. Also, the left cuff is two rows shorter than the right.  I’m glad they are finished.  Now I can go back to my black socks.  When they are finished, I’m starting on these.

Red Bird Kit

Red Bird Kit

It’s mosaic which I haven’t done in a long long time.  Somewhere in this house, I have the Barbara Walker  book.  It must be forty years old.  Am I that old?  It works with one color at a time and every pattern round is worked twice.  The yarn is wool, silk, poly amide and cashmere and it’s machine washable.  That’s why I like Red Bird.  They always send great yarn and interesting patterns.

Pretend You’re a Pig

February 1, 2009

It was really cold today.  And the wind didn’t help matters any.  We didn’t even get to the end of the road.  Gus was glad to turn back also.

In an ongoing effort to combat boredom, Maude has been trying to invent new  games.  Today, it was “Pretend you’re a Pig”.  p10106951

She had a lot of fun with this one until she forgot how to get down.  She shamed herself by crying.

On Line Shopping

January 22, 2009

Normally, this is the best way to find what I want.  Not today.  The scissors, the book and the needles I wanted were out of stock.  I finally found the book elsewhere, but I didn’t want to pay the price.  I had no luck with the scissors.  My day went downhill from there.

It Snowed Yesterday

January 21, 2009

You’d never know it, now.  It snowed all day and an hour later, it was all gone.  It was in the upper twenties when we went for a walk.  I stayed on the road and turned back early because I was so stiff.  Usually, by the time I get to the end of the road, I’m limber, but not today.  It’s a good thing we went out early, because the wind started blowing hard and I hate wind.  God.  This is so lame.
