Food Lion products

August 14, 2008

FOOD LION MAKES THE ABSOLUTE WORSE MACARONI SALAD I HAVE EVER TASTED.  And their seafood salad if pretty awful, too.

We went down there to pick up a few things.  They had tuna steaks and mahi mahi on sale.  The tuna was great by the way.  Jenn had given me about 20 crabs which I had picked the day before trash day.  I was making crab cakes and I wanted some macaroni salad go with it.   The store in Reisterstown has very good macaroni and potato salad and different kinds of each.  This store had one of each.  I didn’t like it’s colorless appearance, but Doug said it can’t be that bad so I got it.  Even the macaroni noodles were awful.  They were bigger, thicker and doughy.  They were gross.  There was a lot of cheap mayonnaise and little else.  So—-tomorrow is trash day and guess where the macaroni salad is.  I still have the seafood salad.  I was able to doctor it to passable if not eaten alone.

Well, the pleasant continues to hold, even though it was a bit more humid today.  The gloves are coming along.  I tried to take a picture of it on my hand, but I didn’t have much success.

I was Going to Talk about Knitting. Honest!

August 9, 2008

This was hanging on a pot holder on my deck in the morning.  I wish that I had seen it emerge.  We spend a lot of time on the deck, but it probably happened during the night anyway.  I love the way the sunlight comes right through it.  I wonder how long it will be before Zip or Maude discover it.

My portulaca are coming along nicely.

I’ll show you my knitting tomorrow.  Honest.

Cornbread

August 8, 2008

I tried a few different cornbread recipes before I came up with this.  I don’t use a cast iron skillet, just an ordinary cake pan and I cut it in wedges.

  1. 1 cup cornmeal
  2. 1 cup flour
  3. 1/4 cup sugar
  4. 1 tbsp plus 1 tsp baking powder
  5. 1/4 tsp salt
  6. 1 cup milk
  7. 1 large egg, slightly beaten
  8. 2 tbsp bacon fat

Set out a stick of butter to soften.  Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl.  Mix in the milk and egg.  Melt the bacon fat and blend it in well.  Oven should be 425 degrees.  Grease or Pam the pan and pour the mixture in.  It will be thick.  Cook for 20 minutes or more.

Don’t wait for it to cool before cutting.  I usually set out the butter a few hours before I start the cornbread.  I start about 45 minutes before supper so it’s still warm when it goes to the table.

That’s all for tonight, folks.  This antibiotic is making feel weird.

No Cornbread

August 7, 2008

This has not been a good day.  Yesterday, my doctor called and said that my blood work indicates that my thyroid has improved and he is lowering my dosage.  That’s good news.  This morning, I went to the dentist.  They played with my lower denture and it feels much better.  That’s good news.  This afternoon, my doctor called and said my urine indicates that I have a bladder infection.  That’s bad news.  He said to drink plenty of water and eat two yogurts a day while I am on the antibiotic.  In other words, I won’t be needing a laxative for a while and I best not roam too far from the toilet.  That’s bad news.  When I got the prescription, it said to stay out of the sun.  For crying out loud!  It’s Summer!

Day 2 of My New Teeth

July 25, 2008

I was going to post a picture, but I thought that may be a bit too gross.  The uppers are doing good.  The bottoms are so-so.  The bleeding has stopped which is great because it would pool under my tongue and I’m not supposed to spit.  So I lean over the sink and let it drain out.  Wait a minute.  That’s kind of gross, too, ain’t it?  I thought of sitting in front of Doug and letting it ooze out my mouth and watch his reaction, but he is so squeamish that I was afraid he would faint.  It sounded like great fun, but he would be pissed and he might hit his head.  So, I seem to have a sore place where my only three good teeth were located.  The dentist said it probably would be and he was right.  I have some stuff to put on it if I absolutely must, but tonight I get to take them out all night.  Big whoop.  I’ll see how it feels tomorrow.  I am getting used to eating with these things.  It only took me one hour to eat two soggy pieces of French toast and fifteen minutes to eat half a banana.  And you can forget the fresh peaches and blueberries I bought.   I got out some ground sirloin for supper.  Normally, I would make burgers, but not tonight.

I got new stuff today.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric finally came.  It will make some child very happy.  The fabric is good quality.  I need to get it washed one day soon.  I wash all my fabric before sewing to get rid of the smell.  It gives me a headache.

And, my new camera came!  Yeah!  The battery is charging so maybe tomorrow I can play with it.

I’m Alive

July 23, 2008

Things went well today.  I had a dozen teeth pulled and a new upper plate put in.  Tomorrow, I go back for lower teeth.  I was very nervous, but everyone was so great that I managed to live through it.  I’ve worn a partial upper for about forty years so this full one isn’t so bad.  And it’s nice to look decent again.  I knew I would be all right when I woke up this morning.  In the past, I always had nightmares the night before going to the dentist.  I have to go back every few weeks for six months, then I should get permanent ones.  These temporary ones look so good, I can’t imagine permanent ones looking any better.  I only have six to get pulled tomorrow.  Piece of cake.

Guess the Plants

July 21, 2008

These are coming along nicely.  They are some flowers that Ihad last year, but I can’t remember the name.  I didn’t get much planting done than because of my hip.  I couldn’t even sit on my stool long enough to put in more than a few flowers.  It was very discouraging.  I think these wereleft in the garage.  The flowers look like tiny roses in several colors.  They like the sun.  I have been thinking about what I want to put in my front bed.  Maybe these will do for the time being.  Eventually, I’ll put in some perennials there.

Self Inflicted Haircut

July 14, 2008

It’s a good thing that I have thick hair.  This afternoon, I got out the scissors and cut a bunch of it.  I have a lot of dry split ends in the back.  The last two times I went to get a haircut I said I wanted all the dryness cut.  What is so hard about that?  Well, now it is out and it still looks pretty good and it is a lot easier to wash.  I may get it evened out in a couple of weeks.  It still waves in the back and you would never know I cut about three inches off the top.

Well, I didn’t get any takers on the free socks so they are now a women’s size 7 or 38.  (My favorite shoes are made in Germany.)  There is still time to apply.

I decided on my quilt back.  I also decided to cut it into squares and add some more colors.  All the work that I put into on the front deserves an interesting back.  Of course, I may never finish that quilt.  But that would also mean I would never embroider again and I know that’s not going to happen.

New Pump and other Crap

July 10, 2008

The plumber was four hours late.  That’s not bad for Sussex county.  We’ve got a new pump, tank, pipes and other crap and now it is wonderful.  Doug helped.  He is handy.  I made him roasted red potatoes that he likes so much.  This time I put fresh mushrooms with them and I also baked some pork chops.  He was happy.  I made more than usual thinking I might have some for another day, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are gone by tomorrow afternoon.   I found a recipe for chocolate banana cake that I might try.  I like banana nut bread, but i wanted to try something different.

Some of my Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric came today.  I have no idea when the rest will come.  The Loralie fabric I ordered came yesterday.   I have got so much nice fabric that I can’t part with anything to use on the back of my quilt.

Mallards and ?

Mallards and ?

The white guy was swimming around with the ducks late this afternoon.   They were at the far end of the creek so this is as good a picture as I could get.  I went through two bird books and the only thing that matched the beak was a Mute Swan.  I went through all the goose, duck, gull and shore birds since we are only 30 minutes from the ocean.  As you can see, it is about the same size as the Mallards.  See how much smaller it is than the Canada Goose?  That long yellow beak with the black at the base makes me wonder.  Is it a youngster?  I was hoping it would come down the creek forward me, but it headed out to the river.
