I Thought Today was the First

November 2, 2010

Maybe it’s because we were expecting to have two propane heaters installed.  No one showed up until 4:30 and all they did was bring the tank.  I had to take Gus for a walk by myself and I was feeling crappy.  Do you ever feel like you are on the verge of getting a cold, but it never materializes?  I felt that way for a few days.  I’m better today.  Not wonderful, just better.

When I left Bismarck on Wednesday morning, it was in the 20’s, the wind was going at about 50MPH and it was snowing.  Yes.  I said SNOW!!  I am so glad I had brought my Philosophers Wool sweater, my Sanguhar gloves and wool entrelac hat.  They had to de-ice the plane three times before taking off.  We were an hour late leaving.  I kept hoping someone would start crying or screaming for a little entertainment, but no such luck.  I guess the plane was full of North Dakotans.

Here’s my girlfriend in the hat that I made her getting ready to take me to the airport.

By the time we got to Denver, it was 50 and sunny.  My daughter called while I was still on the first plane, so I called while I was waiting.  She had heard about the nasty weather.  We chatted for a while.  It was nice to hear her voice.  I was going to get a bite to eat, but I had a headache and nothing appealed to me.  I bought a bottle of water and added a tube of lemonade mix.  I felt a lot better after that.  I had plenty of time so I refilled it and added iced tea mix.  Since I had a two-hour wait, I found a semi-quiet space and sat down and knit and listened to my iPod.

Reading, Not Writing

October 17, 2010

I have been trying to catch up on my blog reading.  I was so far behind it was embarrassing.  So, I decided that I wouldn’t blog until I had read every single one.  I just didn’t think it towould take three weeks.  Of course, absolutely gorgeous weather didn’t help either.  Plus we’ve been painting and moving stuff around.

Painting sucks.  Tea helps.

Blue tape is a good thing.  Avery good thing.  Did you notice the pink wall?  My husband picked it out.

Here we have the perfect painting chair.  You can scoot all around the room and never get up.

After painting I got to finish my luggage tags.

I couldn’t decide which design I liked the best so I made four.

I settled on these two.  I really don’t care for these big clips, but it was all I had.  There’s one for my suitcase and one for my big tote bag.  It’s big enough to carry prescriptions, knitting, camera, undies, iPod and other little necessities including my purse.

LSD

September 17, 2010

All right.  Get your minds out of the gutter.  Around here, LSD means Lower Slower Delaware.  Things are different here.  That upper part might as well be part of Philadelphia.  I would also like to thank my Grandson for giving me this sticker.  He knows what Nanny likes.  I display it proudly.

I’ve finished the socks and have started on mittens to match.  With the pattern, doing the thumb gusset was a little hairy, but it turned out well.  I decided to start the cuff with the tan/brown this time.  I think I mentioned that it is lighter than the yellow/orange/green.  Socks get more tugging and pulling than mittens so it should be all right.  Did I mention that I will be delivering these in person?   I finally bit the bullet and booked a flight to Bismarck, ND.  This will be my first time since 9/11.  So many rules!  It’s kind of scary!  I hope I live through it>  At least I’ll have my knitting.

Cotton Briefs

September 13, 2010

Here we have three pairs of cotton briefs–all the same size.  You will observe that the crotch in the middle is much more narrow than the other two.  Do you have any idea how uncomfortable that is?  In case you are wondering if they may be a store brand, there are not.  They are Haines for crying out loud!  The ones on the right are JMS which is part of Haines.  Does this make sense?  Oh.  And they are also longer, almost too long in fact.  Now.  I am not tall, but my torso is.  My pelvis is wide, hence the desire for a wider crotch.  Yeah.  I’m built like an old world peasant, but I’ll bet I’m a lot better at natural childbirth than you are.  At least, I’ve got something going for me.  Anyway, where was I?  BACK TO PANTIES.  I just don’t understand.  Why the difference?  Thank heavens for Fruit of the Loom.  They fit just right!  Thanks Fruit of the Loom guys.  And what about my Haines and JMS panties?  They are ALL in the Goodwill bag.  I did throw two pairs, but the others I had only worn once.

We got a new RED coffee pot.  The one we had a very small area to pour in the water which made neat pouring practically impossible.  And it was on the right which made pouring almost impossible for me and as much water wound up on the counter as in the pot.  It also had too many doo dads.  This one has a large opening, one on/off switch and it’s RED.  Have I mentioned that my favorite color is RED?  Or have you all ready figured that out yet?  How can I go wrong with a coffeepot that matches my glasses?

In other news, I’m going to Bismarck, ND later next month.  I am having a helluva(great word!) time picking a flight.  It’s a real pain.  When I had to travel for work, there was this guy that we called.  I’d tell him where and when I was going and if I needed a car.  He would call back with the conformation and send me authorization.  It was great.  Now, I’ve got all this other crap to deal with.  It does not seem to matter which website you use.  They all seem to have the same price and the same information.

And now Sweetums keeps telling me to go on Thursday and return Tuesday.  He says I shouldn’t wear out my welcome.  The way I look at it is I would only have three days to enjoy myself.  Two days would be for travel, one day to unpack and re-pack, one day to unwind.  The way we chat on the phone, I really don’t think I’ll ‘wear out my welcome’.  This is someplace that I have never been before.  I’d like to have enough time to look around.

I Wish I Had Brought my Camera

September 10, 2010

Besides being a perfect day for a walk, there were some great Kodak moments out there.  Looking out over the horse farm, I saw the most beautiful cloud formations.  It was like a Hudson Valley School painting with that almost surreal appearance.  One of my neighbors, an older gentleman, was decked out in a very nice suit and tie.  I’m used to seeing him in a polo shirt, shorts and sandals.  I didn’t ask him where he was going.  I didn’t want to know.  There was a bunch of ducks hanging out on the old pier so we just them(and they watched us) from the other pier.  Plus, it has benches to sit on.  Next on my list, one of those Nordic Cruisers went by.  They’re kind of cool.  Oh.  I forgot the Police boat.  They’re kind of funny looking.

   Look!!  He’s smiling!

Dot is not.

Sunday on the Nanticoke

September 7, 2010

I was heading down to Salisbury for knitting group when my daughter called.  They caught two full bushels of crabs and they were starting to steam them.   OMG!  OMG!  OMG!  I hadn’t had any this year so I was ready.  But the girls were expecting me.  That’s OK because they would be steaming for hours.  I stopped at Wal-Mart to get another cooler and more enormous Hefty bags.  I wished I hadn’t.  The place was a zoo.  It took me ten minutes just to find a parking spot.  This one is super-duper and only has six handicapped spots.  What’s up with that?  If she had called a half hour earlier, I would have gone to Seaford.  That one is only half the size and has a good fifty handicapped spots.   It makes no sense.  I wasted half an hour that should have taken ten.

I was about 30 minutes late to group.  I said I would be leaving at 4PM to go eat crabs in an effort to make everybody jealous.  We talked about some knitty problems and had a little show and tell(always fun).  Maria was late as usual and I helped her with her glove.  She sent me a picture this morning of the first finished one.  YEAH!   Around 3:45 I remembered I had six bags of yarn to get rid of in my van.  So out to the van we trooped.  We took it back in and dumped it on the floor for everyone to pick over.  I even had a bunch of old needles that I knew I would never use.  They took everything.  I am so happy!   The yarn got good homes.

I finally got out of there around 4:30 and headed on down the road.  I still had a good half hour of driving to go.  When I got there they were pigging out on hot crabs.  I joined in.  They still had about a hundred to cook.  Is there anything better than hot steamed crabs?  We all had about ten a piece.  There was also corn on the cob, green beans and hot dogs.  Everything was good.  Observe grandson, please.

We sat and talked for a while and watched the sun set.

Time for me to go home.

Acorn Club

August 30, 2010

Who are these people and why do they keep sending me my husband phone books?  It says, “Prepared Under The Sponsorship Of  The Acorn Club, Inc. A Member Of The General Federation Of Women’s Clubs”.  Women’s Clubs??  Then, why is my husband listed and not me?  Go look me up in the regular phone book.  There I am.  It’s the least they can do.  I pay the frigging bill.  But, then again, as my mother used to say to me, “I was JUST the girl”.  So now, I guess I am JUST the woman–according to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.  They certainly are not going to find me darkening their doorstep.  I’ll just go over here and sit in the corner and knit socks and hope no one notices me.  Yeah.  Right.  Like that’s going to happen.

PS.  Over five years ago, the Powers That Be changed all the house numbers.  Our old house number is shown, whereas every neighbor that I searched has the correct number.  Why is that?  Is it because they made a “donation” and we didn’t?  I won’t say anymore.

Since we have to have a picture, here’s my new glasses.  Don’t you just love red?  I would have included a picture of me wearing them, but I was exceedingly ugly that day.

For those of you searching for knitting content, I spent two days trying to decide what kind of socks to make my girlfriend.  First there was the yarn problem and then there was the design problem.  More on that later.  Time to make dinner.

Back from Reisterstown

August 27, 2010

I wanted to blog while I was there.  I really did.  I probably would have if my son would just get wi-fi.  I could sit at the kitchen table in good light  and tap away.  But he says no.  Some of his friends would never leave.  I understand.  He plugged my laptop into his desktop so I could have internet, but the light is not good and I couldn’t get comfortable.  He did have some really great movies.  Like The Wolfman.  I got goose pimples in the first minute.  I loved it!  It’s not for kids, my daughter, or my husband.

Speaking of my daughter, I called her when I got there.  She was on the corner at the gas station so she came over.  And she came bearing gifts–five to be exact.  What could be better than Disney antenna toppers?  I told Doug that I can never buy a car without an antenna.

I came home to dust everywhere.  I don’t care.  Progress is being made.  That’s what is important.  When my neighbor had an addition done, she cleaned everything every evening.  She says she feels sorry for me.  I guess she assumes that I do the same thing.  Doesn’t she know me by now?  The toilets don’t look bad.  What more do you want?

Here’s my new closet.  It runs the length of the new room minus the door of course.

Here I am standing inside the closet.   See my rolling cart?  I have six and I can ten in here.  There will be shelves all along the wall.  I wonder how long it will take me to fill it?

Flo is always helpful.

Coraline Gloves for Carolyn

August 17, 2010

Do you have any idea how HAPPY I am that are finished?  I spent TWO DAYS weaving in the ends!  That’s 50 per glove!   I had a h**l of a time with the closure at the missing finger with all the color changes and stupid ends.  Usually I put the glove on when weaving.  Since I didn’t want to cut my ring finger off, I had to improvise.  I used an Emory board, a fat ballpoint pen and a tube of lip balm, but working between the pinkie and middle was still difficult.

If you are interested in making your own, I’ll be putting up a new page.  I’ve already started it, so it won’t be too long.

I will be starting her third pair of gloves this evening.  One color this time.   Then, I think I’ll make two pairs of socks.  I have got to make myself a pair of Caroline gloves, but with fingering weight.    It should be Autumn by then so I’ll probably start a sweater.  But, will I be able to get to my yarn by then?

new kitchen wall

Here is the new kitchen wall.  Doug called the cabinet people today and someone is coming by tomorrow.  Yeah!

See the little closet?  Flo thinks that it’s a good place to keep her Skunky.  She has a lot of trouble finding a place to keep him.

Sitting on a Pier on the Nanticoke

August 11, 2010

Some mornings it is really hard getting up, dressed and out the door.  Gus is jumping around like this is the most wonderful thing to do in the world and I just want to smack him.  I stagger into the kitchen and take my little thyroid pill.  I hate this pill.  I have to take it on an empty stomach and I have to wait a while before taking my vitamins.  How am I supposed to remember all this crap?  No wonder I am such a grouchy old woman.

Thankfully, Doug has made coffee.   I pour a cup.  I get the half & half.  I hear this aakk, aakk, aakk.  Oh yeah.  Flo.  She wants some, too.  But hold the coffee.  I give her some and I say, “It’s a good thing your only six pounds.”  She pays no attention to me and walks off when she finished.  She doesn’t even say thank you.  “Ungrateful little snot.”  OK.  Back to me.  I take a sip.  Man!  I go to the bathroom, rinse off my teeth and put them in.  I can’t take all that heat on the roof of my mouth.

Already, it’s 82 outside.  The forecast says 95 today.  Doug says we should get going.  He has all ready got the sheets in the washer.  He makes me sick.  By the time I finally manage to get dressed, the sheets are on the line.  We finally make it out the door.  It’s not too bad.  There’s a breeze.  Cora comes over to see us off.  She was laying under my car.  Gus hates this.  He is so afraid one of the cats is going with us that he turns green and almost has a stroke.  They have more sense than that.

Walking by the horse farm was no fun.  There’s no shade.  My hips and knees prefer to use the street, but cars kept coming for some reason.  So I walked along the lumpy grass.  We finally came to driveway that takes us to the pier on the river.  The owner has a nice macadam driveway.  I can do arm exercises and walk at the same time and there are plenty of trees shading our way.  What more do you want?

It’s always breezy on the river.  Or so it seems.  I just love it.  Is there a better place to live?  I don’t think so.
