It’s Still Not Right

January 5, 2011

I would really like to finish the Side Slip Cloche.  Really I would.  Last night I ripped out the I-cord and started another.  This morning I looked at what I had done and ripped it out again.  I had to take Rue Boy to the vet so I took my knitting and decided to try something different.  The office was pretty filled so I knew that I would have time to experiment.  I think I came up with something useful and, hopefully, I will finish it tonight.  I might even be able to start on the tam.  Don’t hold your breath.  ‘Cause I sure ain’t.

In case you’re wondering, Rue is a perfect little specimen of kittenness.  He is working on turning into a cat and is twice as big as when I got him.

Scarf for Side Slip Cloche

January 4, 2011

I started the scarf the same as the brim on size 9 so it would be looser.  When it was long enough to fit around my neck, I joined another ball of yellow and needle and worked each stitch twice, putting one stitch on each needle.  I then worked the pattern for about thee inches.  It needs to be as long as it is wide.  When it was long enough, I knit or purled two together to return to sixteen stitches.  I reversed the ruffles by increasing rather than decreasing.  It didn’t take long at all and I was finished in a few hours.  I like these ascot type scarves, especially when I’m out walking.  If I get too warm, they fit nicely in my pocket.

I have figured out what is wrong with the cloche.  It looked like a big yellow blob on my head.  I like the shape of it. It fits snuggly around my head and covers my ears.  I tried a big flower.  Cute, but no cigar.  Finally, I realized that I needed to add a contrasting band.  So I’m currently knitting an attached I-cord around the top of the brim.  It should be finished tonight.  I’m also thinking about making a tam for not so cold weather.

Trying to get a picture of Rue Boy when he is playing is very difficult.  His favorite game is chase and he wears the girls out, especially Olive.  She usually takes her naps in the basement where Rue can’t find her.

The Best Christmas Present EVER!

December 29, 2010

What do you get a man who has simple desires and doesn’t really need anything that he can’t get himself?  You ask him.  It’s the way to go.   Basically, he gets something that he would like, but wouldn’t go out and buy for himself.

In case you’re wondering, his name is Rue.  In keeping with our tradition of naming our pets after dead relatives(there are a lot to choose from when you are as old as us), he is named after Sweetums’ father.

Going out and buying a pedigreed kitten was a bit hard for me. My other pets are from shelters or were homeless.  It’s the way I am.  My husband had been wanting a Ragdoll for a long time.  What else could I do?  I found a cattery about two hours away.  They had several kittens born in October.  They would be ready for Christmas.  They sent me pictures.  I sent them a deposit.  Sweetums wanted the one with the grey ears and tail.  I drove there to have a look and also decided that he was the one.  I picked him up the week before Christmas.  I went alone both times in order to preserve some element of surprise.

Some of you are probably thinking that we have too many pets.  But, why not?  We have the room.  We have the time.  We love animals.  We can afford to take proper care of them.  We are very happy in our home and they make it even happier.

Why Do I Bother?

December 21, 2010

I was hoping that the girls had matured enough not to climb the tree.  Well, forget that.  The oldest was up in it within ten minutes.  Not that it really matters.  Only one row  of lights works anymore and some of the branches are broken down.  This thing is definitely going in the trash after Christmas.  All ready, I am beginning to forget what my good ornaments look like.  Sweetums was talking about getting another after Christmas.  I wonder when we will be able to use it.  Especially since he got………

I think I will go insane.

Getting Ready to go for a Walk

December 16, 2010

It was 19 degrees when I got up.  By the time I was finally ready to go, it was up to 25.  I don’t think it’s been up to freezing the last few days.   I got out a turtleneck, sweatshirt and jeans.  After I was dressed, I realized I should put on my silk long johns.  Off comes my jeans and my handknit double-knit socks.  I started to pull up the long johns and they caught on my poor too-dry skin.  Out comes the body cream.  Now my long johns are kind of stuck to my legs.  Then I decide that my heels  feel awful so they get lathered with foot gunk.  Well, I can’t possibly put on my nice handmade wool double-knit socks now, can I?  I dug out a pair of my old Orton socks.  While I had the body cream out, I figured I might as well do my arms, so off comes the turtleneck and sweatshirt.  Half an hour later, I’m finally ready to go.  By this time, Sweetums has fallen asleep and the dog has died from utter frustration, but I drag them out anyway.  I sure as shit wasn’t going to let all this preparation go to waste.

There was no wind so we walked down to the river.  I was able to sit out on the pier for several minutes.  It was so beautiful  and so wondrously quiet.  The sky was completely overcast.  It looked and felt like snow was coming.  We saw the first flakes while we were walking back and now we have about an inch on the ground.

Today’s lesson:  As the outside temperature decreases, the number of pee balls in the litter pan increases.

I’ve made decent progress on my hat, although, I am not certain in what direction.  I’m just letting it talk to me.  I hope it knows what it is talking about.

Ice on the Creek

December 9, 2010

It was 21 degrees when I got up this morning.  Except for one small corner, the creek was completely covered in ice.  The geese were not happy and left deposits on everyone’s lawn.  I had to break down and wear a coat this morning.  A turtleneck, corduroy shirt and heavy sweater weren’t doing the job.  My having to wear a coat on my walk means that winter has come to Lower Slower Delaware.  It was very beautiful sitting out on the pier on the river.  There wasn’t much wind so I didn’t freeze over.  I was also treated to a small tug pushing a barge with an enormous pile of sand.  It came very close to the pier.

Flo kept running in and out, trying to find the door into summer.  She finally gave up and proceeded to get into as much trouble as possible.  Of course, she said she didn’t do it, but I have proof.

Maybe I should knit her a body suit.  It would have to cover her ears and tail, but leave a place open to pee.  She prefers to go outside and will go in the sink if we are not fast enough.  This cat is such a pain in the butt, it’s a wonder that I keep her.  She’s just a little tabby cat.

Leafprints Shawl 2

November 30, 2010

I had such a good time making the first one that I decided to make another.  This time I found a cotton/viscose blend in a DK weight in my stash.  I used my size 7 circular Signature Art Needle.  It worked great.  There was not the catching problem that usually goes with this type of yarn.   The needle was smooth.  The cable was smooth.  The join was smooth.  What more do you want?  Actually, what I want is more sizes.  But, I can wait.  They’re worth it.

I knit until I almost ran out of yarn.  Luckily, it was at the end of a leaf.  I had three small skeins that were 110 yards each.  Then I found four more in a beautiful aqua/turquoise/teal so I started another one.

When I came to the end of the first skein I decided to stripe it, changing colors every other row.  I had two light and two dark skeins.  It’ll have to do.

I’ve been working on a personal tag for a bag I am giving my daughter.  I’ve had the front for a while and I finally got around to making the back with her first name.  I put magnetic snaps on the strap because I’ve never used them before.  If you’re lucky, I’ll have a picture of the completed project tomorrow.  Then, maybe, I can start a Christmas table runner.  I need to do something to get me in the mood.

Nothing gets Cora in the mood, except, maybe, food.  See that poor flower in the hanging basket outside?  They all died the other night when it got below freezing for the first time.  Can winter be far behind?  It is so hard to believe that I was in North Dakota a month ago.

Yesterday

November 8, 2010

I was going to blog.  Really, I was.  When I sat down with my laptop. my mind went blank.  And what was I going to talk about?  I’m still not certain.  It was the first day of Standard TIme so I was up an hour earlier.  I had time  for a nice breakfast, a walk, some reading, some knitting and a long hot shower before leaving for knitting group.  I still left early.  I needed gas and I wanted to stop at Staples to get a book spiralled.  Is that a word?  I don’t know anymore.  There are so many new ones out there.  The stop at Staples was a waste of my time.  They said it would be about an hour before they could help me and that I could leave my book.  I said, “No thanks.  I’ll be back in two weeks.”  They said they were always very busy on the weekend.  This is a lie because I always come on Sundays before my group starts.  And the job they were doing?  It seemed to be watching the customer operate one of the big machines.  Huh?

Group, as usual, was a lot of fun.  I wore my new socks.  I love them.  They are so me.  Betty started talking about my socks so I flipped my clogs off and pointed to my feet.  She started laughing.  She didn’t realize that I was wearing them.  She’s one of those people who you want to make laugh just to hear her.

Maria made NO progress on the fringe of her shawl.  She kept complaining that it didn’t look right.  She kept losing the yarn overs.  I hope I got her on the right track.  I told her she can’t do anything new until she finishes the fringe.  Fat chance of that happening.  She’s all ready planning her next shawl and she has the yarn for it.  I really like the pattern she found.  Maybe I’ll do it, too.

At this point I was going to show you what I have started.  Unfortunately, my laptop and my camera are not on speaking terms with each other today.  This has happened before, but I do not currently feel like fixing it.  But there is always cat pictures.

This is Miss Kitty.  She is a Certified Bed Cat.  She will sleep with you every night when you visit my girlfriend in Bismarck.  And, believe me, you need at least one of these when you go there.

And here’s Flo.  She missed my lap so much while I was gone.  She’s been trying very hard to make up for it.

And here’s Cora enjoying the fire.  She didn’t even realize that I was gone.

Just a Common Tabby Cat My Foot!

September 24, 2010

She is making me crazy.  From  spending two nights in a row out to having to get stitches.  I keep telling her she is just a common tabby cat and she can easily be replaced, but does she listen?  No!  She just goes out and gets in more trouble.  Then she curls up around your neck, purrs loudly and kneads you while getting blood all over your favorite Tigger shirt while waiting at the vets.  She knows Mommy will make everything better.  So yesterday, she was scrubbed, shaved and stitched and feeling pretty pooky.   She doesn’t care much for her medicine, but she is still pretty weak.  In a few days, we’ll probably have a hell of a time getting it in her.  She is getting better.  She used the potty this morning and walked to the back bathroom to get a drink of water.  She’s back to sleeping in her cubby in the junk room.  I don’t think she’ll be getting in our bed for a while or pretending she’s another cookie jar on top of my kitchen cabinets.  And where are these stitches?  I wanted to take a picture, but she was too embarrassed and curled her tail around them  I think she called me a pervert.  Her diction is off due to her medication.  I said it was for research.  She told me I was full of it. I promised I wouldn’t say, but I will tell you this.  She won’t be holding her tail high for a while, especially when she running away from something with very sharp claws.  And it’s a good thing her medicine gives her loose BMs.   You know, she wouldn’t have these problems if she would just come in with the others.  But no, she has to stay out and play with her “other” friends.  Bold words for a Common Tabby Cat.

It’s a good thing she’s been fixed.

Life in Lower Slower Delaware

September 16, 2010

This cat is not dead.  Look.  I’ve got a headache.  Maybe I’ll blog later.
