New Hat

July 4, 2008

We went tonight instead of tomorrow so I wore my flag shirt anyway.  I also wore my new red capris which are a size smaller, thank you very much.  I almost bought my jeans shorts a size smaller, but I do a lot of walking around in them and they need to be washed a few times.  I can still take them in if necessary.  But not until I finish my quilt.  Unless I really start hating it, I finish what I start and other stuff just has to wait.  I love seeing the finished product and pray that it looks like the idea I had in my head.

No sewing was done today.  I had to bathe and wash my hair and make blueberry cake.  I swear it gets better every time I make it.  It’s so nice to have the time to experiment.  I wasn’t too happy with the strawberry banana muffins, but I have some more ideas.

I’m not real happy with the pattern of my new socks and I have changed a few things to make it knit faster.   The pattern is so hard to see that it doesn’t matter.  The yarn is wonderful.  I”m thinking about going to a size smaller needle when I get to the ankle.  I may also loose a few stitches.blue socks

Ordinary

July 3, 2008

We had another day with low humidity and temperatures low enough to turn the air conditioning off.  I love to sleep with the windows open.  The Powers That Be say it’s going to up to ninety-two tomorrow so I’ll enjoy it while I can.  I did some gardening.  I bought Doug another Hibiscus in orange and Linda gave me some Cone plants.  I put mulch some yellow daisy looking plants and pulled grass out of the Impatiens.  We still need to look at trees for the creek-side.  We don’t know what we want.  zip help Zip knew what he wanted.

I worked on my blue socks later in the day.  Now that I have the pattern pretty much memorized, it’s going a lot faster.  The leg is over half done.  I made 106 split squares for the quilt border.  I think that’s enough.  I hope that’s enough.

I got my confirmation letter from Stitches.  I already knew because my second choice for Friday was sold out the first day.  I will be taking Shadow Knitting with Vivian Hoxbro on Friday and Danish Skra-trojer with Beth Brown-Reinsel on Saturday and Sunday.  I like an all day class and a two day class is even better.  It should be fun.  The brochure came the same day.  Why wasn’t it sent out before the first sign-up day?

I Didn’t Go

June 30, 2008

My son called me around 10AM.  He asked if I had left yet because I didn’t have to come.  He said he was having a panic attack last night (as if I didn’t know).  He had since settled down and talked to someone.  He is getting some help this evening and tomorrow before class.  He really did sound much better this morning so I stayed here.  This has happened before and it will probably happen again.  At least he recognizes that he is this way and can straighten himself out.  We talked about getting together in a couple weeks.  I promised to bake him something good and bring leftovers.  Doug always complains that there are no leftovers when I go, but he says it good naturedly.

I couldn’t decide what inner border to use, so I put two on.  Tomorrow I hope to start making the patches.orange crush  I couldn’t resist that orange, yellow, red and purple stripes.   Doug isn’t stepping on Gus.  He’s rubbing his belly.

I hate Blue Jays.  If they are not dive bombing Zip, they are dropping their kids on our deck.  We have to get every cat in and wait.  In the meantime, the little twerp poops all over my deck.  Maybe the rain tonight will wash it off.jay jr  Darn.  We forgot about the chairs.  Oh, well.

I also got a little work done on the blue socks.blue socks

Teacher from Hell

June 28, 2008

I was really hoping to get a lot of work done on my quilt in the next few days, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.  My son called a little while ago, very upset.  He is taking a writing class that he absolutely has to pass in order to graduate.  The teacher has been intolerable and half the class has left.  He has an oral on Monday and a final report on Wednesday.  He is not  worried about the oral.  He always does well with them.  I don’t know what I can do, but I’ll do what I can.  He wants to graduate so badly!  He’s trying hard, but the teacher seems to take pride in tearing everything apart.

The weather is suposed to be better tomorrow and the following few days so I won’t be running from air condiioned room to air conditioned room.  Maybe I’ll take my machine with me and work on my quilt.  I have a million split patches to make which also means a wad of fabric and cutting board and cutter.  michael We’ll see.

Bye, Guys.

New Cup

June 22, 2008

We walked down to the river this morning.  The lawn guy was at the home on the other side of the path.  His dog was in his pick-up and he took off after Gus.  At least the dog knew some commands and I got him to return with “GO” and pointing.  We headed back through the woods instead of the road.  Doug walked ahead and clipped branches and sprouts.  It reminded me of those English novels where the servants would go ahead making everything comfortable for the ladies.  I was chuckling to myself.  Doug can be such a sweetie at times.  Other times, I just want to shoot him.

I found a replacement for my beloved Chesapeake Cat Club cup.  It is shorter and wider and I can get more ice cubes in it.  Isn’t it Cute?  elephant cupelephant cup

Sunday

my menIt’s Father’s Day.  I am thinking about my Daddy.  I loved him so much.  He died far sooner than he should have.  There are so many things that I never got to say.  I wish that he had been around to know Doug.  And my  son, Winston.  He would have loved being able to look him in the eye and talk to him about the pitfalls of being so tall.

This isn’t what I had planned to talk about, but my son just called his Dad to wish him a Happy Father’s Day.

Ham Salad and Popovers

June 14, 2008

Doug is still pooky.  ham saladSo, we’re didn’t go out tonight.  Hopefully, we can go out tomorrow.  He’sbeen sleeping a lot today so he is probably going to be up all night.  He ate a good supper.  I made ham salad and popovers.  The popovers didn’t popover very much, but they were still good.  I had a ham last week, and even though I took a huge chunk to my son, there is still a lot left.  Here’s what I do:

  • 2 cups cubed cooked ham
  • 1+1/2 cups fresh (raw) peas
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 4oz. chopped Cheddar (one cup)
  •  About 3/4 cup Miracle Whip or mayonnaise with some mustard or salsa Verde

Mix and refrigerate for a few hours.  Get out your cookbook or go on line and look up popovers.  I think I have used at least four different recipes and they have all tasted good.  When the popovers are done and they have cooled a bit, fill them with the ham salad.  Often popovers will have a hole in the bottom.  If not, poke one and stuff it in.

Makes 4 to 6 servings so if there is only two of you, fill as you eat.  Filled ones aren’t so good after a day or two.  The picture above are our leftovers.  These also make a nice “grown-up” food for kids parties.

Back to Normal

June 12, 2008

wavy sockIt’s just about 80 degrees with 55% humidity.  The air conditioner is off and the windows are open.  It’s June again.  I should have gone to the supermarket, but I didn’t.

I sat out back and worked on my socks.  I’m ready to decrease for my big toes.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll have a picture of a completed sock.   I kept forgetting where I was on this sock.  It doesn’t look very wavy to me.  I thought of taking it apart a few times, but I didn’t.  I kept hoping it would look better.  maybe I’ll make the other sock differently.  What do I like about it?  It feels wonderful–bot in the knitting and in the wearing.  The fit is right, too.  I could make little X’s and O’s.  I’d probably forget where I was there, too.  But, what the hey.chesire cat

Look at what my daughter gave me!  She found it on eBay.  She said one of her customers was wearing one just like it.  She got it at the resort so Jenn searched and found it on eBay.  It makes feel good when things like this happen.

Did I mention that I also sew hats?

HOT

June 9, 2008

My son and I were over in Cockeysville and a sign said 104 degrees.  I should go home.  At least the whole house is air conditioned, not just some rooms.  When we lived here, we tried a couple of times to get central air.  It took several calls just to get someone to come and then they never called back.  This happened twice.

I said that I would fix his pants for him, but I am going to take the machine to another room.  I wish he had

called about that before I left.  I would have brought my Sapphire, but I am stuck with my old piece of s**t Brother.

If this post looks odd, please remember , I am not at my usual computer.

Going

June 8, 2008

Zip I have to run to Reisterstown.  Zip wanted to come, too, but I told him it’s too hot and the house doesn’t have central air.  A guy is coming to write an estimate on the third floor.  I don’t know when i will be back.
