New Reading Glasses

November 29, 2011

I believe they say it all.

Well– I could have gotten purple, but I look so much better in yellow.

I’m Seeing Much Better Now

November 10, 2011

Sometimes it’s really hard trying to explain how I feel.  I can look out my window across to other side of the water and see a man walking along the edge.  He is a bit bent over with white hair and ruddy complexion.  All this without my glasses!  This is  so wonderful for me.  I’ve been wearing glasses since I was two years old.  And  now I can see better than my old corrected lenses.  Yesterday, sitting on the pier on the river, I said a little prayer of thanks.  It is all so overwhelming.  I didn’t know life could be like this.

Flo, (aka Sheena, Warrior Princess), can’t hide on top of the cabinets any more.  I didn’t think I had a skinny grey pig.

That white blob down by the water is our Sweet Baby Rue.  I can even make out his tinted ears and tail.  And those things swimming around are geese.

Two More Weeks

October 24, 2011

Some things can’t be done in one step.  So I have to wait.  Bending over,  moving too quickly, staring all make my head hurt.  I even had to roll a ball of yarn with the hank in my lap because the swift was making me nauseous.  It took me forever to finish a pair of pants, but I have been getting a lot of knitting accomplished.

Happy Birthday, Rue

October 11, 2011

How did he go from this:

to this:

so quickly?

I know I haven’t said much lately.  That should improve after another week or so.  I can’t tolerate looking at this screen for long.  Even the big screen on the desk top is hard.  I am really looking forward to getting it done.  There is so much reading that I need to catch up on.  At least I can still knit and sew well enough not to have to read instructions.

Irene! Why Did You Do This?

August 29, 2011

Three trees went down on our tiny island.  I hope that it doesn’t discourage the geese couple next year.

Other than leaves and branches everywhere, there wasn’t much damage around here.  The creek overflowed into some yards, but that’s typical of any storm.

One of the advantages of a hurricane is being able to leave the western windows open.  The girls loved sitting in the window, especially Cora.

Sunday morning, she was the first one out.  Here she is, trotting toward me.  It’s a wonder I was able to take this before she was on me for a back scratch.  It’s also a wonder my camera isn’t covered in cat hair.

“What twelve-foot drop?”  “I need to scratch my face!”  She is fearless!

Not to be outdone, Miss Olive gave it a try.  She said it was wet.  She doesn’t like wet.

Flo (aka Princess) stayed in and finished Olive’s breakfast.  Then she had, au lait sans cafe.   Thank you, Miss Kraft.  Some things you never forget.

Where was that boy during all this?

Watching rain and wind is really hard work!

New Stuff

August 20, 2011

We just finished dragging in new furniture and rearranging the old.  We’re taking a break before the final placement.  Sweetums got out a beer and I got out a yogurt and a Seagrams flavored beer.  That’s a good lunch.  Right?

Sweetums has been belly aching for months over my worn recliner.  I’ve been belly aching about him sitting in it so much.  So.  We went shopping.  And this is what I bought.

I’m ready to sit and knit.  Doesn’t look like a recliner, does it?  That’s the best part.  Most of them are so bulky and down right ugly.  I can’t see how anyone would want one in their home.  And where’s my old one going?  Into the sitting area in our bedroom where Sweetums can read and no one can see it.  If he gets lonely, he can his own d**n recliner and join me.

We started our search at their bargain store.  No recliners of interest, but I did find a nice container for my sewing supplies.  So I bought two.  Hey.  I know a good thing when I see it.   They are jewelry armoires.  Does anyone have that much jewelry?  I tried taking a picture, but it turned out crappy.  Usually, these things look, well, tacky.  These are Mission style– an unassuming clean look.  I now have sixteen drawers to fill.  Can I do it?  Considering that I have fifteen filled little plastic drawers, I believe I can.

Hobby Lobby in Salisbury

August 17, 2011

I went expecting it to be like the store in Bismarck.  Well, it wasn’t.  The center half(or more) was home decor.  Is that a hobby?  The best thing to do was walk to the left edge and look through the aisles that skirted the store.  Even then, I was a bit disappointed.  Drawing pencils were sparse.  I can get better quality at Staples.  They did have Wilton baking supplies, but not what I needed.  There was one small rack of knitting pamphlets that one would expect to see at Woolworth’s and just a coupe of aisles of mediocre yarn.

I came mainly for fabric.  I was expecting to see many aisles of fabric.  But, here again, I was sadly disappointed.  This store does not have a quarter of what I saw last Fall.  I wish now that I had bought then and shipped it back.  All I wanted was to make some summer blouses.  A few weeks ago, I pulled out all my old boring ones from work and put them in a Good Will bag.

This isn’t exactly Summer blouse material, but it’s the only thing of interest that I could find.

Weeds: There’s an APP for That

August 8, 2011

After hitting END, wait about an hour.  A vehicle appears in your driveway.  Late the next day, all the weeds are gone.  It’s a miracle.  There was one little problem.  Sweetums programmed it to remove the ferns.  I didn’t discover it until it was too late.  What do I do?  Is there an app for butt boils?

It even weeded around the volunteer Impatiens.

And whatever these are.

I still have to chop at some bushes.  They’re blocking my view of the water.  I attacked them three or four years ago.  Sweetums almost had a heart attack.  Well, they grew back.  And I’m going to do it again.

It’s Official! I’m Losing It

July 16, 2011

Yesterday, I forgot what day it was.   I needed a pedicure and I wanted a manicure so I called.  I thought it odd when I was told to come at a specific time.  Usually, I get, “When do you think you’ll be here?’  When I walked in I was surprised at how busy it was.  The greeter said, “Well, it’s always like this on Friday and Saturday.”  I couldn’t believe it.  I never go around the weekend for this reason.  I even pulled out my phone to check the day.  Yep.  It was Friday.  Just shoot me and bury me in the back yard.  Boy.  Wouldn’t that surprise the next owners.

I thought it was time for a plain pair of socks.  As you can see, I didn’t make it.  I didn’t even start out with a plain rib.  And whereas the yarn is subdued, it isn’t plain either.  This is Sockotta yarn which is nice for Summer.  The leg is purposely loose.  I used a smaller needle for the heel gusset and decreased an additional six stitches on the foot.  It fits just the way I want it.

Some Things Take Some Getting Used To

July 11, 2011

Take Gus’s new leach.  Sweetums likes it.  Gus likes it.  I don’t care for it.  It has a retractable cord.  It’s hard to hold.  I always lock it to about six feet.  It helps my balance.  Gus understands.  He’s a good boy when I have the lead.  We bought it mainly to enable Gus to get in the river.  He likes to walk around, get wet and drink the water, but he panics if he slips.  He is NOT a swimmer.  I honestly think he feels better when he is in the water now.  Before, we would let him loose, but only when the tide was low.  We worried about the roots and the old fallen down concrete  boat ramp.  Now he’s a happy boy.

Then there’s the new mouse.  Sweetums got it for my laptop.  It’s wireless, but so are the others.  It’s just a tad too big.  It’s hard to hold.  It’s amazing how something a mere 1/4 inch bigger can be such a pain. And it’s a little slow.  So I got the old one for my laptop.  I’m so happy.  It works so much better.  Sweetums is so nice.

I think I am going to be getting used to a new standing mixer soon.  The motor is acting weird.  I was making my son “The Cake” for his birthday and it was having trouble.  It’s only thirty years old.  About four years ago, I bought some parts for it.   That helped.  I can’t  knead dough with it anymore and I can’t find the food processor, just the blades.  I guess I had better start looking.  Ugh.

Did you notice that I made it through this post without mentioning yarn or cats?
