Nice Day for a Monday

November 24, 2014

When it’s 72 degrees and mostly sunny, it’s hard to be anything but happy.  It was great being outside in just shirt sleeves, even though I had to watch out for wet leaves. It rained last night.  Being clumsy sucks.  We opened all the windows and the back doors.  The animals had a grand time.  Sweetums washed sheets and hung them out.  I love the smell and the feel of air-dried sheets.

glasses 003   New glasses!  I was surprised to find some frames that I really liked this year.  Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Where?

June 6, 2014

If I could be anywhere, where would it be?  I love my little house on the creek.  I can look out at the creek whenever I’m working.  I can check on the ducks and geese and count the turtles on the logs while thinking about what I want to do.  It would be nice if it weren’t so hot in the summer or cold in the winter.

How about a summer home in Maine and a winter home in Florida?   No, not Florida.  It’s an OK place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.  How about Georgia?  Don’t know.  I’ve never been there.

It would be somewhere along the coast.  I need to see water.  What about Savannah?  It’s on a river, isn’t it?  A river would be nice– better than a lake.  And I wouldn’t want to be in town, but not too far out.  I think about two acres would be enough with plenty of trees, especially on the road side.  It would be nice to think of people driving by and wondering what’s down that lane.  They would probably be underwhelmed by what they see.  A one story house with a dog and some cats wandering around and Sweetums and me sitting on the patio.  There would also be plenty of pleasant trails for walking with Gus.

When the weather started to get too warm, I would drive to Maine.  This could be difficult with Sweetums, the cats and the dog in tow.  I couldn’t leave them all behind for such a long time.  They would have to come along.  And therein lies the problem.  Gus gets carsick.  We’ve tried everything.  Nothing works.  And where am I going to put the litter pans?  The cats are not going to be happy, especially the ones that prefer the huge outdoor sandbox.  And then there is Sweetums.  Sweetums does not like to go anywhere.  Maybe I could just tie him to the luggage rack.  And I can’t go anywhere without my knitting.  I would have to bring an awful lot.  Or I could stop at yarn shops along the way.  Now, there’s a thought.  I have to bring at least one sewing machine which means stopping for fabric, too.  And I have to bring clothes, because, I am not a clothes shopper.  I forgot about books.  We can’t live without them.  Now, how do I get all this into my mini minivan?

A solution:  Rent a big ass RV.  I’d have to rent a driver, too.  Another mouth to feed.  He’d better know how to cook.  You weren’t expecting me to drive it, were you?  I probably wouldn’t make ten feet without taking something down.  I don’t want to think about it.  Or I could rent a yacht.  Maybe not.  I would wind up throwing Sweetums and Gus overboard.

Somehow, we make it to Maine.  Where is our house?  It would be the same one story down the same little lane only this time it would sit along the rocky coast. I thought of Mount Desert Island, but I think I want to be a little further north.

This may sound lovely, but when would I get to see my son and daughter and grandson?  I would have to keep my little house in LSD.  It’s only two hours away.  We always have a nice time at Christmas.  Would I wait until January to go to Georgia?  I don’t want to deal with any snow.  I could send what’s-his-face down with the herd and drive my mini minivan when I felt like it.

You know, this sounds too much like work.  I think I’ll just stay right here, in my little house Up A Creek In Slower Lower Delaware.

Cat Blankets

February 21, 2014

I had no idea that I had so many!

022114 011  Olive loves the entrelac baby blanket.

022114 009  Sweet Baby Rue with his old shale blankie.  He likes to make dough on it and purr.

022114 008  Flo is a bit greedy and commandeers two of my favorite sweaters.

021814 007  And here is Sheena Warrior Princess upon her wool hat throne.

Maggie Pie Learns to Knit

October 23, 2013

I was very surprised when Flo suggested that Maggie Pie should to knit.  I was even more surprised when she said that she would do the teaching.  I said,”Are you sure you want to do this?”  She just gave me that look.  You know, the one that says, “Stupid Human”.  Cats are so good at that look.

Lesson No. 1:  Find the end.

P1050663  P1050666  P1050669  P1050664  Found it!

P1050670  You expect me to do WHAT? with it?  You’ve got to be kidding.  It makes a much better floor decoration.  I might even catch a few humans with it.

Flo may never be the same.

Dot is NOT Happy

October 12, 2013

20131002_125531  She has been giving Maggie Pie sewing lessons.

20131005_161201  And she was very happy with her progress.  She even let her work alone one night.

And, this is what happens.

P1050654  Maggie Pie made a little wall hanging for Hallowe’en.  She was so proud of herself.

Cats Can Sew

October 3, 2013

I’ve been outside a lot lately, enjoying the weather, when I should have been sewing. I had a little wall hanging to make for October and I am making a quilt for my nephew and his soon-to-be wife.  I have been making great progress on a silk shawl while sitting on the deck.  This is my second start.  It’s just doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy like I think it should.  Maybe I’ll feel better when it’s finished and blocked.

In the meantime, Dot has been trying to work on the quilt.

Here she has fused part of an applique before sewing it down.  Note the coffee cup on the far left.  I guess I really did smell coffee in the middle of the night.  I still wonder how she managed the iron.  It must weigh almost as much as she does.  Could Gus have helped her?

Forgotten Socks

September 14, 2013

P1050601  These socks knitted so quickly, I forgot to show them.  Maybe It’s due to the fact that they are a boring color.  What was I thinking?   I guess there are times when boring socks are necessary.  I just haven’t found it yet.  Maybe, I’ll give them to my daughter.  She tends to coordinate.  Where does she get that from?

P1050605  It has a nice pattern down the front that was easy to remember.  It was from Socks That Rock club.

I doubt that I will be joining the club next year.  Right now, I’m looking at my yarn basket.  It holds the yarn from last four kits and I’m thinking about how much they look similar.  I have not been inspired to knit any of them.  What happened?  As a matter of fact, if I wait until the rest come, I’ll have plenty for a sweater, if you like greens and purples.  They all go together.  At least I got some good patterns out of it.

P1050618  We have broken with tradition and decided to name our motor mouth, Maggie Pie.  I mean.  Does she look like a Donna or a Ruth or a Gloria or a Betty?  They weren’t working for us.  Now.  I did toy with Stella for a while.  I stll have a couple of weeks to decide.

Another Little Quilt

September 9, 2013

P1050623

This one goes on my island. Now I can set anything on it without damaging its butcher block top. And, of course, it’s cute as can be.

P1050627

Gus was a little upset that there were no dogs on it.  So I showed him the other side.  He mumbled something about the injustice of it all.

We Were Walking the Dog

September 2, 2013

We were about halfway down the lane when we heard a noise.  At first, we thought it was a bird calling.  We also noticed something black in the road.  A shoe?  We soon realized that the noise was coming from the black shoe and, then, it started to move toward us.  Definitely not a shoe.   The shoe was a kitten.  She let Sweetums pick her up.  She purred and cried at the same time.  Definitely talented.  Sweetums handed me the house keys and the kitten and I took her home and Sweetums and Gus continued down the lane.

I brought her in and put her on the counter with some kitten chow.  While she ate and purred and hollered, I got out the flea drops and put one on her neck.  She didn’t even notice.  She had fleas and ear mites and she was starving.

P1050612  So now, we have another mouth to feed.  And what a mouth!
