A Soup Day

February 5, 2014

I finally decide that I must sit down and say something and the internet keeps coming and going.  Why?  It may be this older than dirt laptop.  The desktop is fine.  But I like  sitting in the corner with my laptop.  And I like being able to look out at the creek.

20140108_083750  I am glad that the ice is gone.

So I decided to make hamburger soup.  I found mushrooms, carrots, celery, onions, corn and, of course, ground beef in the refrigerator.  I got out the barley, cans of diced tomatoes and Rotell, Worcestershire, basil, garlic, and what ever else looked good.  Currently, it is bubbling nicely and in about half an hour, I’ll throw in the barley and corn.  If Sweetums doesn’t think to ask for biscuits, I’m all set.

Girlfriend Scarf and Short Finger Gloves

P1050737

My grandson said she likes bright colors.  I hope he’s right.

P1050722  P1050725    A little big for me, but not too big.  The recipient wore them to work today so I guess I won’t be getting them back.  Oh well.  If and when I get caught up, I’ll make a pair for me.  I still have a skein of this.

I Didn’t Realize

December 5, 2013

I was looking through my stats and noticed that it’s been a while.  I thought I should report so you won’t think I’m dead.  I think I’m good for another twenty.

I have been working away on the quilt.  My machine is tired and in need of a tune up, but my other one does not have the applique stitch I am using.  I am down to the last two blocks.  When they are finished, my baby is going to Westminster for a much needed spa day.  My other machine is better for the final quilting anyway.  I’m getting excited to be so close to finishing.  Besides, I’ve got an enormous pile of sewing that needs to be done.

Speaking of leftovers…… Who said that?Image    I made turkey potpie.  Only, I don’t make a pie crust.  I make biscuits.  Unbeleivebly good!  So easy.  Leftover turkey, gravy and vegetables.  If you don’t have enough vegies left, canned mixed vegetables work well.  Make the biscuits with just enough milk to hold them together.  Oh.  You don’t make biscuits?  Well, you should.  I’ve never tried the ones in cans.  You will notice that I use an old Corning ware pan.  I put the turkey, vegetables and gravy in the pot on a medium setting.  Stir it up good.  Sometimes I have to add a little water or a little flour.  It should be a little thick.  If it’s too thin, the biscuits will sink too much and be down right yucky.  My oven is set at 400 for about 20 minutes.  The biscuits should be nicely tanned on top.

Image    Sweetums likes a little butter on the biscuits.  What a lovely picture.  And we have enough left over for tonight.  How can you love a man who doesn’t like leftovers, especially when they are this good?

You know, this is not what I planned to write at all.

Knitting Plans have been Thrown Out the Window

November 24, 2013

I tried.  Really I did.  But I forgot something.  It’s called Christmas.  It all started a couple of weeks ago.  Fer and I were in a knitting shop when she spotted some yarn she liked, so I bought it.  I thought, I could squeeze in one pair of socks with my Must Complete Before Anything Else projects.  My little coppery scarf was almost finished at the time.  I could do it.

P1050715

It was fun to make and it looks good with a turtleneck.  I should have laid it out on something that contrasts.

I started making the socks.  The pattern is fairly simple and they should be finished this evening.  They are striping nicely.

P1050717

So, everything was going along as planned when a friend asked if I would make short finger gloves for her Mother for Christmas.  She is in and out with her job and needs them for cold days.  I couldn’t say no.  She even had an outline of her hand.  OK.  We can do this.    I had some blue, rust and tan yarn that looked good in a DK weight.  They won’t take long.  Then, I can get back to my unfinished projects.

Wait a minute.  My grandson wants me to make a scarf for his girlfriend.  Well.  I can’t say no to my grandson.  You know?  I found some red yarn that is smooth wool, rayon ribbon and furry.  That’ll work.

Maybe finishing those other projects will be my new years resolution.

Finished At Long Last

November 5, 2013

P1050699  What a pain in the butt were these socks!  I am so happy that they are completed.  I tried following the directions.  Honest. I did.  But I didn’t like the way they were going.  The toe didn’t fit my toes.  I wanted my usual rounded toe.  My toes demanded it.  But these are toe up socks.  And my toes said, “So?”  I started the second sock from the top.  I used a simple knit two, purl two rib.  I t looked much better so I took out the rib oon the first sock and changed it, too.  I thought about the heel, but I went with the same afterthought one.  I’d liked the contrast.  I made my usual rounded toe and tried it on.  it fit just right.  Happy toes.  Happy feet.  Happy me.

Removing the unwanted toe was time-consuming.  At times I wondered why I was doing this.  I thought about tossing them.  But I couldn’t.  They have to be right.  They have to be finished.  I have to be satisfied.  That’s all there is to it.

I’ll be working on the copper colored scarf next.

A Blue Heron Yarn Experience

November 2, 2013

The weather was so nice today, I decided to drive over to Easton to the new Blue Heron shop. It was their Grand Opening and just about everything was on sale. And, well, tomorrow the clocks go back to standard time, so I’ll be depressed for the next five months. Cold and dark sucks.

Happy thoughts. The shop was great. I loved it. Even the furniture is adorable. You have to check out their button book.  I think I could have stayed there all day and been happy.  I should have taken pictures. I keep forgetting my phone has a decent camera.

P1050695  And this is my purchase–2 sock plus, alpaca lace, wool metallic, a pattern and some buttons.  I’m happy.

Trying Knitting

October 24, 2013

I’ve been doing a lot of sewing of late. Knitting—- not so much. I now realize that I will not be able to finish the quilt in time. But I still have this urgency within me. I am running low on fusible paper and I have decided on the border color. According to my gut, I must go shopping! NOW!! So, of course, something has come up every day this week to keep from going. My insides are going crazy. And I think I have managed to give myself a cold. So I’m popping one of those zinc lozenges every three hours. They are so gross!

Then there’s the knitting.  I  love knitting.  I get so much satisfaction from seeing a completed article.  I never have more than two projects going.  You know.  One that fits in your purse or a small bag and one that can only be worked at home.  Currently, I have FOUR things on needles and I am about to start on a fifth.  How the h**l did this happen?

P1050678  Silk shawl.  Half finished.  I was so bored that I had to stop.

P1050656  Socks.  Unusual construction.  But I can’t memorize the patterns.  Not a good carry around project.

Next was a small square for an ongoing afghan.  No picture.  It’s a surprise for someone.  It only took two hours.

P1050674  Scarf.  I bought this from Stacy.  It glistens and has charms.  A nice simple scarf?  No way.  I had to pick a SIXTEEN row pattern that, again, I have not managed to memorize.  Just when I think that I’ve got it, I find myself going the wrong way.  Hear that?  That’s me beating my head against the wall.

P1050684  It’s been sweater weather this week.  I got out my new sweater.  The sleeves are too short.  This is what happens when you try something on without wearing the correct undergarments.  By this I mean a long sleeve knit (or two) instead of a sleeveless top.  Luckily, I have most of a skein left.  I also plan to make the sleeve more narrow to help keep the warmth in.  A sweater is no good if it dosen’t cover those pulse points.

Maggie Pie Learns to Knit

October 23, 2013

I was very surprised when Flo suggested that Maggie Pie should to knit.  I was even more surprised when she said that she would do the teaching.  I said,”Are you sure you want to do this?”  She just gave me that look.  You know, the one that says, “Stupid Human”.  Cats are so good at that look.

Lesson No. 1:  Find the end.

P1050663  P1050666  P1050669  P1050664  Found it!

P1050670  You expect me to do WHAT? with it?  You’ve got to be kidding.  It makes a much better floor decoration.  I might even catch a few humans with it.

Flo may never be the same.

Start and Stop Socks AKA Schwabische Socks

September 22, 2013

These socks were aggravating. The Heel Turn and Sole Flap sections were a bit confusing.  If you blindly follow along and do exactly what it says, you should be all right.  I tend to skim which is understandable since I’ve made more socks than I care to think about.  Some things are over-explained to the point that I wanted to scream.  Other times, I found myself saying, “What?”  Where?”  Parts were hard to “see”.  When I read a well written pattern, I see it all developing in my mind’s eye.  I had to put these socks down a few times and do something else.  I also forgot to make the foot narrower, but it’s not too wide.  I’m hoping they feel better after a good wash.

P1050635  See how loose it is .  I could grow two more toes in there.

I couldn’t get myself to make the same sock again.  I had already spent more time on one sock than ordinarily takes me to make two.  I decided to use the foot pattern down the front and back.  I kept the rib pattern throughout and it was enough to make the foot more narrow.  I needed a beer when I was finally finished..

P1050641  Much better.

P1050633  Finished.

Forgotten Socks

September 14, 2013

P1050601  These socks knitted so quickly, I forgot to show them.  Maybe It’s due to the fact that they are a boring color.  What was I thinking?   I guess there are times when boring socks are necessary.  I just haven’t found it yet.  Maybe, I’ll give them to my daughter.  She tends to coordinate.  Where does she get that from?

P1050605  It has a nice pattern down the front that was easy to remember.  It was from Socks That Rock club.

I doubt that I will be joining the club next year.  Right now, I’m looking at my yarn basket.  It holds the yarn from last four kits and I’m thinking about how much they look similar.  I have not been inspired to knit any of them.  What happened?  As a matter of fact, if I wait until the rest come, I’ll have plenty for a sweater, if you like greens and purples.  They all go together.  At least I got some good patterns out of it.

P1050618  We have broken with tradition and decided to name our motor mouth, Maggie Pie.  I mean.  Does she look like a Donna or a Ruth or a Gloria or a Betty?  They weren’t working for us.  Now.  I did toy with Stella for a while.  I stll have a couple of weeks to decide.
