Greek Yogurt

It tastes like puke.  I have tried every brand and every flavor.  And, it still tastes like puke.

Getting Rid of Stuff

February 18, 2012

It’s all I seem to be doing lately.  I think it has something to with the kitchen business.  When you start rearranging drawers and cabinets, you just can’t stop.  I should sew.  It’s been ages.  And I have some great ideas.  And I have some great fabric.  But I should really rearrange some things in that area.  But, first, I should go through some things and determine what exactly goes where and what is worth keeping.  What may have value to someone else and what should just be thrown away.  That’s all I seem to do lately.  I went to Reisterstown for a few days and did the same thing there.  I am surprised at how much I want to be shut of that house.  Anybody want a hundred year old house?  I sure don’t.  I get tense every time I am there.  All I want to do is enjoy my little house on the creek.  I don’t need six frigging bedrooms.

I’m still working on my Miss Marple socks.  I should be finished.  Last night I put a different toe on the second sock.  Today, I decided I liked the second one better.  I started to frog the first toe, but I got carried away.  And now, I have to redo half the foot, too.

I’m So Lucky

February 6, 2012

I was sitting on a bench over the river this morning and I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was.  We have a nice home on the water in a pleasant neighborhood.  We can afford to make improvements to make our home even more perfect for us.  All those years of working hard paid off.  When I was young and struggling, I never thought that I would have anything like this.  I learned early that the only way to change anything was to do it yourself.  Something my lousy education certainly lacked.  I am as happy as I possibly can be.

Wait a minute.  Did I just say that?  I’d better be careful.  I’ll ruin my reputation.  I mean, if I were one of the seven dwarfs, I’d be Grumpy, so these feelings are kind of strange for me.

Our kitchen is coming along.  We still have some decisions to make.    The little round table is nice for two, but a small island would help.  Sweetums was considering an attached rectangular table.  Interesting.  After the island, we need to consider countertops.  Oh.  And a hood.

My Camera is Tired

January 25, 2012

It takes pictures.  But it doesn’t give them back.  I tried two different cords and two different computers.  It taunts me by saying, “Yes, I’m connected”, then it says, “Fooled you” and turns itself off.  Hyperventilate  Mumble.  Mumble.

I had some good pictures on that camera–like the animals enjoying the wonders of the Sacred Banana and my knitting and the ongoing saga that is my kitchen.

Frank has been doing a great job on re-purposing the old cabinets.  And with the old stove gone, the floor can be finished.

We keep moving the chow, but the cats still manage to find it.

New Stove

January 21, 2012

It has gas burners and electric ovens.  That’s all I really wanted.  But we had a 42″ space to fill, so we bought a 40″.  It has five burners with three different BTU.  There is a small oven that my favorite baking dish fits into nicely.  The main oven has more programing options than I will probably ever use, but I’ll have fun trying.  What can I say?  I like to bake.  One thing I don’t like; it’s stainless steel.  I think stainless steel is highly overrated.  I’d be happier if it was white or almond or almost any other color–even blue, but that’s life.  Anyway, I really do love it!  Oh!  I forgot to mention it’s also convection and self cleaning.

Why am I sitting here when I should be playing with my new toy?

I Still Can’t Find Anything

January 13, 2012

We’ve been going out for supper the last three days and I’m hoping we won’t need to today.  I thought about putting something in the microwave, but Sweetums said, “Let’s just get a burger.”  I guess a microwave meal didn’t appeal to him either.

Frank cut off the peninsula next to the stove.  It’s surprising how much that opened the room.  The floor should be finished today.  Well, it’s not really finished.  Another section still needs work.  The current stove goes and the new floor needs to be extended, hopefully, to the back door.  I always thought carpeting there was stupid.

We are going to get a dual fuel range.  I really miss cooking with gas and an electric oven cooks so evenly.  I’m so glad we didn’t have a granite top on the side cabinets.  It sawed in half very nicely to make room for the new range.  Flo, as usual, has been helping.

Lurking Under the Floor

And I thought the pink floor was ugly.

And this was on the wall?

I found this is the dining room.

The Last Piece of Pie

December 10, 2011

A dozen carefully selected Stayman Winesaps, three perfect pies, twenty-four delicious pieces and this is what it all comes down to.  You will have to excuse now while I enjoy this last piece of perfection.

Getting Rid of Christmas Decorations

December 3, 2011

It had to be done.  I had lights that hadn’t been used since 1998.  Yeah.  1998.  In 1999, four weeks before Christmas, I fell and dislocated my thumb.  I had this stupid cast on.  I could hardly knit, let alone put lights on the tree.  I was depressed as hell.  And, then, there is was.  My salvation.  An artificial tree with lights!  Alleluia!  There will be Christmas after all.   I bought that tree and never looked at real trees again.

So.  Where was I?  I filled an enormous box to overflowing with lights.  By the time we had gone through everything, the back of the van was full.  I was a little nervous at first.  Sweetums kept going back and forth on the lights.  He loves to decorate the outside.  He really does a good job.  When you cross the little bridge and look over the creek, you will see our deck all decked out.  Once again, I digress.  There are now a decent number of decorations about and the tree is once again overladen with ornaments.  It looks good.  I’m happy.

One more thing.  Last year, I could not find my singing snowmen.  Well I found them.  All five are set up on the counter.  Will Santa, aka my grandson,  bring me another this year?

Wait!  Wait!  Where is my Minnie Mouse tree topper???

Mending Sucks

November 30, 2011

When I think about all the great stuff I could be making, it really frustrates me.  It’s so boring!!!  It all started when Sweetums found some zippered sweat shirts that he liked.  The sleeves were about an inch too long.  “No problem”, I said.  As long as I was mending, I might as well fix some other stuff that has been laying around.  I went to the ‘Wall of Shelves’ nd started pulling things out.  Boy, was that a mistake.  It’s been about two weeks so far and I’m still working on it.   I should be finished and on to something fun.  The problem is, I keep putting it off.  There’s always something else that needs my attention.  I am such a procrastinator.  Is that a word?

I have also decided to give lampshade making a try.  I tried fixing this eighty or ninty year old one, but it kind of fell apart.  Since it looked homemade to begin with, I decided to give it a try.

I could only find an appropriate weight and texture paper in white or black, but it’s hard to tell what the original color was anyway.  Cutting was hard, but punching the holes is worse.  About six or eight is all that I can manage at a time.
