Girlfriend Scarf and Short Finger Gloves

December 10, 2013

P1050737

My grandson said she likes bright colors.  I hope he’s right.

P1050722  P1050725    A little big for me, but not too big.  The recipient wore them to work today so I guess I won’t be getting them back.  Oh well.  If and when I get caught up, I’ll make a pair for me.  I still have a skein of this.

Knitting Plans have been Thrown Out the Window

November 24, 2013

I tried.  Really I did.  But I forgot something.  It’s called Christmas.  It all started a couple of weeks ago.  Fer and I were in a knitting shop when she spotted some yarn she liked, so I bought it.  I thought, I could squeeze in one pair of socks with my Must Complete Before Anything Else projects.  My little coppery scarf was almost finished at the time.  I could do it.

P1050715

It was fun to make and it looks good with a turtleneck.  I should have laid it out on something that contrasts.

I started making the socks.  The pattern is fairly simple and they should be finished this evening.  They are striping nicely.

So, everything was going along as planned when a friend asked if I would make short finger gloves for her Mother for Christmas.  She is in and out with her job and needs them for cold days.  I couldn’t say no.  She even had an outline of her hand.  OK.  We can do this.    I had some blue, rust and tan yarn that looked good in a DK weight.  They won’t take long.  Then, I can get back to my unfinished projects.

Wait a minute.  My grandson wants me to make a scarf for his girlfriend.  Well.  I can’t say no to my grandson.  You know?  I found some red yarn that is smooth wool, rayon ribbon and furry.  That’ll work.

Maybe finishing those other projects will be my new years resolution.

Completing Projects

November 21, 2013

My need to complete things can get frustrating.  I have been working steadily on the quilt, but I still have seven, out of twenty-five, squares to complete.  Then I need to cut about three yards of stripes to go around each square.  The end result should be a 102 inch square.  I think(hope) I have enough batting.  The batting I have is 96″.  Should I piece or try to find 102″ wide batting?  I did find 108″ backing fabric.  Normally, I use leftovers that I don’t know what else to do with or I just don’t like the fabric any more.  Ah, decisions, decisions.  I’ll worry about that later.

P1050701  Here’s the  binding and backing.  The binding I bought at Mares Bears in Lewes.  The backing is from The Country Store in Intercourse.  My daughter and I went up there on the seventh.  She loves having Thursdays off.

I also bought some food fabric.

P1050709  Raspberry, grapes, plums, garlic, carrots, apples, cauliflower and broccoli, and avocados.  Oh, my.   You can never have enough.

Forgotten Socks

September 14, 2013

P1050601  These socks knitted so quickly, I forgot to show them.  Maybe It’s due to the fact that they are a boring color.  What was I thinking?   I guess there are times when boring socks are necessary.  I just haven’t found it yet.  Maybe, I’ll give them to my daughter.  She tends to coordinate.  Where does she get that from?

P1050605  It has a nice pattern down the front that was easy to remember.  It was from Socks That Rock club.

I doubt that I will be joining the club next year.  Right now, I’m looking at my yarn basket.  It holds the yarn from last four kits and I’m thinking about how much they look similar.  I have not been inspired to knit any of them.  What happened?  As a matter of fact, if I wait until the rest come, I’ll have plenty for a sweater, if you like greens and purples.  They all go together.  At least I got some good patterns out of it.

P1050618  We have broken with tradition and decided to name our motor mouth, Maggie Pie.  I mean.  Does she look like a Donna or a Ruth or a Gloria or a Betty?  They weren’t working for us.  Now.  I did toy with Stella for a while.  I stll have a couple of weeks to decide.

At Least the Rain has Stopped

July 14, 2013

The temperature isn’t that bad, but it’s very humid.
P1050478  Flo doesn’t mind.  She still likes to work on her tan.  She’s just a summertime cat.

I finished writing my sock pattern.  I mailed it over, but it hasn’t arrived yet.  The battery was very low and my laptop is ancient.

Twenty-eight years ago today, I was trying to take a nap in the back yard while Sweetums was painting our bedroom ceiling.  I hadn’t slept well the night before due to the heat and an enormous belly.  That night, my water broke while I was taking a bath–an interesting sight.  Later, I went downstairs and cleaned the kitchen.  Around 2Am, the pains started.  I called Dr T and woke Sweetums and told Jenn.  Sweetums didn’t believe me.  I still had ten days to go.  Idiot.  It was time to go. That’s all there was to it.  Jenn showed up about 15 minutes after we arrived.  It was good to have them both there.  My son showed up around 5:30AM.  Life is good.  Needless to say, it was not for several days until I got any sleep.

Thinking About Daddy

June 17, 2013

Yesterday, my son called Sweetums to wish him Happy Fathers Day. While they talked about things, I thought about my own father. He died so long ago. He died too young. My son never knew him or my 47 year old daughter. I was seven months pregnant when he died. I was living in California then, and couldn’t even go to his funeral. But, maybe, that’s best. I close my eyes and there he is. He’s got that bad little boy grin. His shirt sleeves are rolled to the elbow. He calls me “Princess”, “Angel”. He makes me feel like the most wonderful person in the world. All the trials and trepidations of the day have melted away and I am content.

Welcome Sign

May 29, 2013

I thought I would make a welcome sign for my son’s front door. I already had a pattern and fabric that I could use.  However, once I got into it, I realized that the fabric wasn’t right for him.

P1050446  I think I’ll give this one to my daughter.

I started digging through my stash and this is what I came up with.

P1050448   I hope he likes it.

Things Are Almost Normal Again

May 25, 2013

That big old house in Reisterstown has finally been sold.  Now it’s up to someone else to keep it from falling apart.  The new owner is an energetic young woman.  I hope she has the stamina for it.  And will I miss it?  No.  Not even that big kitchen.  I’ve got a big kitchen here.  And it’s much nicer!  It did have a pretty back yard, but the back yard here is so much more than just pretty.

I want to thank my daughter for all the hard work in order to make this happen.  Thank you so much for the garage sales and craigs list sales to help clear out the house.  Thank you helping your little brother clear out and hauling to storage.  Thank you helping him find a little house of his own.  Thank you for letting him and his cat stay in your loft for two weeks. And thank you for feeding him, too.  Thank you for helping him move into his (new to him) row house.  Thank you for trying to keep him on the straight and narrow.  You are the best of daughters.  No mother could ask for a better one.  That person does not exist.  How ever could I be so lucky to have you for my daughter.  I love you so very much.  You are the best!

Daddy’s Ears

May 20, 2013

It’s odd how seeing something can trigger an old memory.  Have you seen the ads for the new movie with Will Smith and his son?  Well, they both have my Father’s ears.  They’re not big, they’re nicely rounded and they stick straight out—just like Daddy’s.  I wonder.  Can he wiggle them just like Daddy?

Here We Go

April 27, 2013

Sorry.  Sorry.  Sorry.  We’ve been ‘unnerved’  for most of the week.  Next Tuesday, all should be finalized and maybe I’ll talk about it.  In the meantime, trying to get all the ducks in a row is downright maddening for a couple of old farts like us.  Sweetums is probably going to be bald when this is all finished.

Even Dot couldn't do it.

Even Dot couldn’t do it.

I also need to get ready for my class at MD Sheep & Wool on Wednesday.  ‘Fiendishly Difficult Stitches’ sounds like so much fun!  I can hardly wait!

The Happiest Day of My Life

It was 11:30pm when the phone rain.  My son-in-law called to say that he was taking my daughter to Hopkins and would call as soon as he knew anything.  I went to bed fully expecting to be awakened in the middle of the night.  When my alarm went off that morning, I called Hopkins.  The operator transfered me directly to her.  And she asked, “Mommy, when are you coming?”  It so very much reminded me of when she was little and had a ‘hurt’.  My sweet little girl had a ‘hurt’  and wanted me there.  Only this one lasted fifteen hours.  Happily, there was a perfect eight and a half pound baby boy at the end of it.

Those words made this the happiest day of my life!
